In the mid 80s,Madonna was on a roll with midas touch that turns everything into gold, wanted to venture into acting at the back of a 56 million unit sales from her first three albums (Madonna, Like a Virgin & True Blue).
A record only a handful of artists had achieved before. The year was 1987, Madonna who had just peaked out of her musical career.. shifted her focus to Hollywood for her 5th movie Who's That Girl (her other four movies prior to this one are A Certain Sacrifice - 1979, Vision Quest - 1985, Desperately Seeking Susan - 1985 & Shanghai Surprise - 1986).
With hardly any time on her hands, she approached Bray and Patrick Leonard to compose the original score for the movie Slammer, Bray and Patrick worked with Madonna writing and producing many tracks in her record breaking..most successful album to date, True Blue ( 30th June,1986) which sold more than 25 million units across the globe.
Patrick sent a demo tape to Madonna which had the raw music compisition for her upcoming movie's OST, Madonna liked the demo tape, arranged for a meeting Bray and Patrick. She then wrote the lyrics, composed the chorus and sang the song..finished recording the song on the very same day in the Warner Bros recording studio in New York.
The audio was released on 23rd of June 1987, selling more than 1.2 million copies in the States,380,00 copies in the U.K and 500,000 copies in France.
After a few months of hiatus, the music video was released to MTV Networks worldwide. It was then did her fans and the common man come to know..about her unparalleled love for Hispanic or Spanish culture.Dressed in a cement color Bolero jacket and a matching hat, Madonna is seen roaming and singing around a park with four kids and a teenager. As the video cuts to scenes of her character Nikki Fynn from the movie Who’s That Girl.
Nikki Fynn walks out of a prison, drives a car through the tracks as a train barely misses them, gets a ticket from the cops. Then she feeds her lollipop to a mountain lion in a cage, gets trolled by thugs in a supermarket.Nikki Fynn is once again seen jumping buildings along with a guy in specs, drives a car crazy again and finally gets chased by the mountain lion she fed before.
As the scene cuts again to the Spanish Madonna in the Bolero jacket, who is watching this in a water fountain (as if the video is projected on it) starts singing again. Then the 2 kids and the teenager push Madonna inside a strange room, where a High Priestess shows a tarot card which shows the cartoon version of Nikki Fynn dancing and as Madonna smiles the High Priestess disappears.
But then she notices an Egyptian Pharoah statue with a key in it's hand..behind the High Priestess's..takes the key and opens a wooden chest on the desk which has pure white uncut diamonds.
2 kids and the teenager join Madonna as they dance and sing. The song reached the no.1 spot in the Billboard Hot 100 charts after debuting at the 43rd position."Who’s That Girl" was Madonna's sixth Billboard Hot 100 no.1 hit, an incredbile achievement no other artist achieved in the entire 80s decade.
