Billy Idol - Greatest Hits (#ad)
Released 2001, Billy Idol Greatest Hits has most of his hit songs to date including Idol's first no.1 U.S Billboard Hot 100 single "Mony Mony", released originally in 1981, this cover of Tommy James peaked at the no.7 spot in Billboard Hot 100 U.S charts and quietly faded away.
It was not until 1987, while promoting his new album Vital Idol, did the U.K born Billy Idol perform "Mony Mony" on stage ,which shook the charts to everyone's surprise and reached the no.1 spot with ease.
Billy Idol's critics are still trying to figure out, how a song that has been played on radio and MTV for seven long years without much of an impact, suddenly reaches the no.1 spot in Billboard charts just after one live performance.
Such was the intensity of Billy Idol's live performance for "Mony Mony", it had to be banned at most schools in U.S.A and U.K.
Looking at the phenomenal success of "Mony Mony", Billy Idol tried his luck by re-releasing two more 1982 singles of his, "Hot In The City" and "White Wedding".
To the surprise of most of his critics and fans, the songs peaked at no.13 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and no.6 in the U.K charts.
Billy Idol Greatest Hits collection has many of his signature songs that never topped the charts but were a treat for his fans, including "Catch My Fall" , "To Be A Lover" and "Sweet Sixteen".
Then there are other songs that made the whole 80s generation go crazy, including "Rebel Yell" ,"L.A. Woman ", "Eyes Without A Face" and "Flesh For Fantasy".
The year was 1983, when Idol released his second album Rebel Yell, an album which will carry on the legacy of this singer for the rest of his life time.
The title track "Rebel Yell" reached the no.6 spot in the U.K singles chart in 1985 as a re-release, but never reached the top 20 on it's original release in 1983.
Rebel Yell had hits rolling one after another, earning Billy Idol a fortune on it's way to the history books.
Rebel Yell also had "Eyes Without A Face", a surprisingly slow number from this punk rock legend which almost made him blind.
The video for this song was shot in a very hot and humid weather of Arizona desert with the temperatures soaring above 50 degree Celsius.
Idol was wearing contact lens which melted into his eye balls, which he noticed a few hours before his live concert in Arizona.
If not for those efficient Arizona doctors, Billy Idol would have been blinded for the rest of his life.
Cats have nine lives, Billy had his three when he almost lost his leg while jumping a signal on his motorbike when recording his 1990 album, Charmed Life.
High on cocaine, Billy Idol would later confess, it was completely his fault and not the other driver.
For some odd reason Billy Idol was never inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inspite of selling more than 15 million albums, whereas lesser known singers with an insignificant amount of sales numbers have been inducted.
