"Sultans of Swing" is a song done by Dire Straits a British rock band and was written and composed by the band’s front-man Mark Knopfler.
The band was formed in Deptford London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler who did the lead vocals and lead guitar, David Knopfler his younger brother who did the backing vocals and rhythm guitar, Pick Withers who played the drums and the percussion and John Illsley who did the backing vocals and played the bass guitar.
Their biggest selling album is Brothers in Arms released in 1985, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and was the first album to sell a million copies on the new compact disc (CD) format.
The song "Sultans of Swing" was first released in 1978 and was then re-released in 1979 and this is the release that made the song become a hit in the US and the UK.
The song was recorded in July 1977 by Pathway Studios in North London.
The song gathered a following after it was put on rotation at Radio London.
The group did well in the song enough to make sure the record executives offered them a contract with Phonogram Records.
The song was later re-recorded in 1978 for the band’s debut album at Basing Street Studios.
A substitute version of the song was recorded at Pathway studios and released as a single in the UK and Germany.
The original version of the song released in May 1978 did not chart at that time, but it entered the charts following its re-issue in January 1979, where it entered the American pop charts with a bang.

The song was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by a Group with Vocal or a duo.
