It was later released in May 1990 from the album Sleeping With the Beast courtesy of Rocket and MCA Records.
With the help of producer Chris Thomas, the track achieved major success especially in France and the United Kingdom. In the charts, it topped for five weeks and became the best song Taupin ever wrote.
To promote the album, John toured the US and Australia from 1989 to 1990. Directed by Alek Keshishian, the music video was filmed in Los Angeles in 1989 featuring Yasmeen Ghauri and Chris Isaak.
Having secured a spot in the UK and US charts, “Sacrifice” played on BBC Radio 1 on mid-1990 then found it's way to more DJs that many other 90s songs.
It reached number one in the UK after being re-released and stayed at the top for the next 26 weeks selling more than 600,000 copies at the time.
Gaining over 111 million views, “Sacrifice” has sold way over 1 million copies in the UK and France only.
John has performed the song by himself and alongside celebrities in various places including being live at the Royal Opera House.
On May 17, 1990, he was live on MTV unplugged and several others that followed after it's success.
Though the charges have been dropped, the artist faced a sexual harassment lawsuit from a former bodyguard.
Several sources claim that Elton is gay but according to the issue of Rolling Stone on October 7, 1976, John personally confessed to being bisexual; however, he was recorded saying that he would rather fall in love with a woman than a man because it will last longer.
Despite his close contact with death from a deadly infection, Elton John has entertained the world with a beautiful voice and ecstatic melodies.
