The Notorious B.I.G - Greatest Hits(#ad)
A week before meeting his untimely death, the American rapper Notorious B.I.G released "Hypnotize" from his album Life After Death on March 1, 1997.
The track reached number one trampling Puff Daddy’s song "Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down" after his passing away and maintained that spot for weeks, before being replaced by Hanson’s "MMMBop" on May 24.
The track has since been referenced in various pop cultures including fashion lines, clothing, television shows and films like the Star Wars, Starsky & Hutch, Roots, King of New York, Ritchie Rich (comic and cartoon character), Underoos (children’s clothing), and finally the Versace, DKNY, Moschino and Coogi (popular fashion lines).
In 2009, the track served as a theme song on the motion picture Notorious while the Fox show The Mick had the song sang briefly by the character Sofia Black-D’Ella.
2017 has been a great year for the track as it was used commercially for Oreo Thins and promoted the Baywatch movie.
On being released, the track became number two on the Billboard but it was already a hit song in the United States radio even before being issued as a single.
Notorious made history in the Hot 100 by becoming the fifth artists on top of the chart after his track hit number one after his death.
Having scored a nomination for the Best Rap Solo Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards, the track lost to Will Smith’s Men in Black.
However, Kris Ex of Pitchfork praised Biggie with his natural talent to sound powerful and sing to the rhythm and according to 50 Cent via NME, he would want the song to be played at his funeral.
It's video was filmed a mot=nth after his death in LA, California and was directed by Paul Hunter.
Puff Daddy and B.I.G appear to showcase a lavish lifestyle of partying with supermodels but later interrupted by helicopters and motorbikes chasing them. A minimum of over 500,000 copies has been sold throughout the US and UK so far.
