Cole gets lucky when Tim Daland, Chevrolet's dealership tycoon hires him to race for his team in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
Daland also manages to convince car builder and former crew chief Harry Hogge to lead Cole’s pit crew.
Trickle puts all his efforts during the private test of Chevrolet. Hogge designs a new Chevrolet Lumina for Cole to drive in Winston cup.
In the initial few races, Cole finds it really difficult to adjust with the big stock cars of NASCAR. Cole fails in finishing the race because of a blown engine and multiple clashes.
Harry figures out that Cole is unable to understand the terminologies of NASCAR teams and puts him through a rigorous training process to help him out.
The intense training really works as he manages to overtake Rowdy and win his first race.
This develops a rivalry between Rowdy and Cole that further intensifies as the season progresses, until the tragedy strikes.
Both of them get injured during a multi-car wreck at the Firecracker 400.
While recovering from injuries Cole falls in love with Dr, Claire Lewicki who is the neurosurgeon in Halifax Hospital.
Meanwhile, both Rowdy and Cole receive a warning from Big John who is the president of NASCAR.
As the racing season nears its climax, Cole drives to the victory lane and kisses Claire passionately while celebrating with his pit-crew.
