Dead Man is a mind blowing American Western movie that was directed and penned by Jim Jarmusch. This film created a great buzz amongst movie bugs in year 1995.
The star cast of this film was quite rich as it includes everyone’s favorite Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Micheal Wincott, Crispin Glover, Gabriel Byrne and Lance Henriksen.
It is interesting to know that it was the last film of Robert Mitchum. The music is given by Neil Young. The guitar seeped soundtrack composed by him was absolutely mesmerizing.
Naivete William Blake played by Johnny Depp,an accountant from Cleveland,Ohio rides a train to the Frontier company to assume the job of an accountant in the metal company of the town.
Blake is having no idea that this trip will change his life and he will be in something that he can never ever imagine.
Plot Summary:
During the journey to Ohio, the train Fireman warns Blake about the enterprise he is going to join.
After reaching the company, he realizes that the position is already filled and he was driven back by John Dickinson on gunpoint.
John is the owner of the company in which Blake wants to work as the accountant.
Jobless and depressed Blake meets Thel Russell who was a former prostitute and she is now selling paper flower for living.
She takes Blake to her place where they find Charlie who was Thel’s ex boyfriend.
He shoots at Blake and accidentally kills Thel who was trying to shield Blake with her body. Blake was wounded too but he somehow manages to kill Charlie.
Later, he came to know that Charlie is the son of Company’s owner Dickinson.
He hires three legendary frontier killers Conway Twill, Cole Wilson and Johnny to bring Blake- Dead or Alive?
Here, Blake finds himself with an American Indian man ‘Nobody’ who is trying to dislodge bullet from the chest.
He told Blake that the bullet has missed his heart just by an inch and he has effectively managed to walk away from death.
The story takes a new turn when Blake travels to west with ‘Nobody’ and came to know about his past.
Verdict:
Although the film is set in 19th century but director has added a few reference from 20th century as well to create an element of interest.
Dead Man is regarded as an extremely well researched movie that very well showcases the Native American culture although it is directed by a non native. This movie managed to get a positive review from the critics.
