Irreversible is a 2002 French art drama film directed and written by Gaspar Noe.Starring Monica Bellucci, Albert Dupontel and Vincent Cassel.
This film employs a non-linear narrative and follows the story of two men who wander through the streets of Paris as they seek to avenge their brutally raped girlfriend.
Irreversible went through numerous controversies upon its release; for it's portrayal of violence, the scene where a man is brutally bludgeoned to death using a fire extinguisher and the 10-minute long rape scene of Alex (Monica Bellucci).
The Story Begins
Alex (Monica Bellucci) gets in to a fight with her coked-up boyfriend Marcus (Vincent Cassel) and decides to leave the party to go home.
She never actually manages to reach home as she is trapped by a pimp called ‘Le Tenia’ in a desolate tunnel and brutally raped.
Her angry boyfriend and her best buddy Pierre (Albert Dupontel) decide to take this matter into their own hands as they try to hunt down the rapists and give justice themselves.
Plot
The movie is basically about the love triangle of Alex, Marcus and her best buddy and ex-boyfriend Pierre.
The movie involved 13 scenes presented in reverse chronological order.
The story is about a young Italian girl Alex who resides in Paris with her boyfriend Marcus.
Alex reveals to Marcus that she might be pregnant which makes both of them really happy.
Alex, Marcus and Pierre go to a party where Alex and Marcus get into a disagreement about Marcus’s behavior and habit of using drugs after which Alex leaves the party.
On the way she comes across a pimp ‘Le Tenia’ who was beating a transsexual prostitute on the road.
The pimp spotted her,chases her,threatens her with a knife. He then brutally rapes her and beats her unconscious.
Marcus and Pierre then talk to thugs named Mourad and Layde who agree to help them in catching Le Tenia if they are paid enough money.
They managed to track that transsexual prostitute who reveals Le Tenia can be found at a gay club named Rectum.
They go to Rectum where they come across Le Tenia standing with another man. Not knowing who Le Tenia is, they attack the wrong man and Pierre kills him brutally.
The real Le Tenia manages to get away without a scratch, Marcus is taken to the hospital after fracturing his arm and Pierre is caught by the police.
Verdict
Irreversible has a lot of violence, explicit language and vulgar scenes. Most critics claimed this movie to be unwatchable due to its violence.
This movie has an impressive dark story of revenge but the screenplay doesn’t do justice to the story-line and makes the plot look weak.
