Original Sin (2001)(#ad)
Release Date: July 11th, 2001
Original Sin is a 2001 erotic thriller directed by Michael Cristofer starring Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie.
Based on the novel Waltz Into Darkness by Cornell Woolrich and Mississippi Mermaid, a 1969 Fracois Fruffaut film. It was produced by Via Rose Productions, the production company of actress Michelle Pfeiffer.
The 2 hour movie is rated-R for its strong sexual content and violence. Original Sin was a huge flop as it didn’t even manage to cover it's production costs, failing miserably at the box office, earning a trivial $36.4 million across the globe.
The Story Begins
When a wealthy coffee merchant Luis Vargas (Antonio Banderas) arranges for a marriage through the mail, discovers that the woman whom he is supposed to marry is actually an impostor of his supposed fiance and is having an eye for his fortune.
As he arrives at the dock to meet Julia Russell (Angelina Jolie), he is surprised to see that she is not as ordinary as he expected her to be.
Though his life is much happier than he imagined but the surprises continue to pile up until the story takes a fateful turn which shows how dangerous and lethal the power of love can be.
Set in the late 19th Century Cuba when the Spanish ruled most of North America.
Original Sin is the story of Julia Russell (Angelina Jolie) who deceives Luis Vargas (Antonio Banderas) a wealthy Cuban Coffee Merchant into believing she was his soon to be wife.
Within hours of her arrival, Luis falls in love with Julia instantly and marries her the same day.
Obsessed with her beauty, Vargas does everything to ensure his wife’s happiness. He even adds his wife’s name to his business and bank accounts, meaning she was free to spend as much money as she wanted.
Soon Luis catches her as she spends almost all of his fortune. He then teams up with Walter Downs (Thomas Jane) to catch the impostor.
This is probably one of those flicks that Angelina Jolie would rather not talk about. There is very little action or adventure.
However, it has a good story with unexpected twists and turns as well as a huge dosage of romantic scenes.
Despite the fact that both Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas were at the peak of careers, with Midas touch turning whatever movie they acted in to huge profits,it still is a mystery why Original Sin flunked at the box office, so miserably.
