Plot
John Connor is the leader of the Human Resistance who launches an attack on the artificial intelligence (AI) system Skynet that’s trying to eliminate the human race.
The year in 2029. However, before the resistance’s victory, Skynet builds a time machine and send the terminator T-800 back to the year 1984 to kill Sarah, John’s mother.
Kylie Reese is John’s friend who agrees to go back in time to protect Sarah.
While Kyle is in the magnetic field of the machine he sees getting attacked by another soldier in the human resistance and has dreams from his childhood that include Sarah.
Kylie and Sarah later go to 2017 and learn that Skynet is known as the global operating system “Genisys” that is popular with the public.
John rescues Sarah/Kyle. Pops (Schwarzenegger) then arrives and shoots John, which reveals that John is a T-3000 Terminator.
Kyle later tells his younger version about the Genisys OS. He also tells him in a mirror to repeat the mirror that the events, which results in them arriving in the year 2017.
A scene in mid-credits shows that the system core of Genisys has survived the explosion and is located in a subterranean chamber.

Casting
The movie includes Schwarzenegger return as the T-800 Terminator known as Guardian/ “Pops” .
He also starred in “Terminator,” “T2,” and “T3.” Schwarzenegger announced on June 2013 that he’d return in his 4th film playing his role of the Terminator.
Background
The goal of “Genisys” was to launch a new trilogy in the franchise. However, the movie was delayed when the franchise owner filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
The company Halcyon Company decided to sell the franchise’s legal rights for $70 million. The Terminator franchise was auctioned off for nearly $30 million to a hedge fund in 2010.
The deal guaranteed $5 million to Halcyon for each Terminator sequel made in order to pay other debts of the company. Pacificor then sold the franchise 3 months later in May 2010.
In 2013 Paramount Pictures was announced as the movie’s distributor and a June 2015 release date was announced. Alan Taylor was picked as the director when others turned down an offer.
James Cameron who directed the first 2 Terminator movies met with “Genisys” producer Megan Ellison many times before during the movie’s production.
As a result of these events, the fifth movie in the Terminator franchise is now an Amazon prime video. It’s a great choice if you’re a fan of the franchise.
Review
“Genisys” received generally negative reviews and there are several reasons. The target audience of the latest film in the franchise seems to be people who know and dislike the first two Terminator movies.
As the title suggests the movie focuses on Genisys and the post-apocalyptic world that features the conflict of humans versus robots. Connor is leading the resistance and is joined by Kyle Reese in a series of battle scenes.
However, it could be argued that none of the scenes are close to the quality and excitement of the ones in the first two Terminator films.
The characters arrive at Skynet’s time-travel device soon after the T-800 robot had just transported back to the year 1984 with Sarah Connor. Reese volunteers going back in time and save everyone.
Afterwards, there’s a re-creation of the opening scene of “Terminator” that includes just about every detail.
However, an irony is that most sequels they don’t seem to pay homage to the first two Terminator films in terms of their timeline.
An older Terminator model played by Schwarzenegger shows up to battle a younger version using CGI. Sarah Connor was raised by the robot since the 1970s and refers to him as “Pops” although there’s no explanation about the twist.
The film could have included a few flashbacks that showed this situation. However, the T-0800 is now a friendly bot and Sarah instead of Kyle is the avenger.
Then there's a jump to the year 2017 where the group must protect the Genisys program. It’s a social media app that Skynet is using to launch Judgement Day.
However, the way the characters talk about the parallel timeline is done in a dull way. It also seems that “T3” and “Salvation” haven’t happened.
The story-line of Genisys is complex. However, an irony is that not much happens in the movie besides chases and fist fights.
An interesting part of the movie is that “Pops” smiles awkwardly to seem friendly to humans. However, it’s not clear if the noise it produces is a sound effect.
The T-800 Terminator explains that it’s “old” but not “obsolete” .However, it could be argued that the movie is focused more on continuing the franchise instead of good storytelling.
Reception
The movie earned nearly $90 in North America and about $350 in other regions. The movie earned the largest box office except for “T2.”
Meanwhile, the movie earned an approval rating of 25% at Rotten Tomatoes based on over 230 critics. It also earned a score of 38/100 on Metacritic based on about 40 reviews.
“Genisys” received some positive reviews. That included claims the movie returned to the work in the first two movies in the franchise.
It was also stated that many critics anticipated the movie to fail based on nostalgia of watching the first few movies in the franchise.
However, the sci-fi film also received a lot of criticism. That included issues like the overall film, plot, action, etc.
After Cameron saw a screening of the movie he stated that he felt the franchise had been “reinvigorated.”
