Summary of Events in the Film:
The central figure of the film is Truman Burbank, the insurance company worker who, without knowing it, is the main actor of a television series, whose goal is to document the life of a person from birth and present it live on television.
For this purpose, Christof, the producer of the series, has had Truman adopted as a baby by his company, and specifically, Seahaven, a coastal town surrounded by water under a huge dome, the OmniCam Ecosphere building, build. Seahaven is an idyllic-harmless small town in the 1950s with the simulated weather, starry sky, sun, and moon.
The dome is located in the Hollywood Hills, above Hollywood's signature. Here Truman grows up, surrounded by actors, daily observed by over several thousand movie cameras. The Truman Show, which is broadcast live 24 hours a day, is funded mainly by product placement.
Truman is only suspicious after 29 years, when a headlamp, which was supposed to be a star, accidentally falls to the floor of his yard. Subsequently, various other misfortunes arouse his mistrust, which he considers regulative from the producers' point of view.
He suddenly recognizes his father in a homeless man on the street, which makes him very irritated and confused as his father died in his childhood during a boat accident.
In fade-outs, the spectator learns more about the beginning of the series, which has virtually documented Truman's life. One learns of incidents, in which outsiders penetrate to tell Truman that he lives in an artificial world.
Lauren is introduced, a woman who still loves Truman, although he married another woman. Lauren was removed from the series after an attempt to tell Truman the truth about his world. Truman knows only that she has traveled to Fiji, which strengthens his desire to leave Seahaven.
It becomes clear that the producers of the series had already tried in Truman's childhood, by all means, to stop him from going on. This was achieved by causing Truman to develop a strong fear of water by various incidents, especially the apparent death of his father so that he refuses to use even a vessel or cross a pier.
Truman tries to break out of this world, whose artificial character he more and more recognizes. After Truman's father had settled for Seahaven, he was reintegrated into the series by Christof to bring Truman out of this crisis.
But the realization that his father has not perished in the sea frees Truman from his fear of the water. Finally, he fled from the city specially built for him by taking a sailboat.
Christof, who watches over all the movements and settings of the camera in a replicated moon over the city, appears as a godlike figure that watches over the fate of Truman, observes controls and manipulates him.
Having tried in vain to Truman by an artificially created storm to capsize, he says to Truman and implies him to remain in Seahaven because the world outside his shielded and peaceful world is cruel and hard. But Truman chooses the exit and the camera fades out leaving Truman's fate unknown.
Analysis of the Film:
This film denounces the life of Truman on the tone of the comedy-drama, more than on that of science fiction. He is locked in a world where only one person controls everything. This one is placed at the top of the studio, on the moon. One can thus see there an allegory of god.
On the other hand, Truman's master also seems to be the spectator and the publicity, the film is covered with references relating to product placement. Indeed, the spectator decides by the choice of its channel of the future of the emission and thus that of Truman. But advertising also has a very important role in his life. His relatives regularly address him using advertising slogans.
The omnipresence of the cameras and the presence of actors, who only play the comedy, where the real feelings have no place, at the risk of being expelled from the show, make a stifling atmosphere, close to Big Brother.
