The Weeknd - Starboy [feat. Daft Punk] [Clean](#ad)
This single is pure radio gold. "Starboy" was dropped in September 2016 by Canadian alternative R&B act The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) and was instantly lapped up,topping the charts in the US, Canada, France, Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden.
It was available as the title track pre-order bonus for his third studio album that released in November 2016.
The single earned the singer his third no.1 on the Billboard Hot 100, after eight weeks at no.2. It gave collaborator French electronic music demi-gods Daft Punk their very first Hot 100 no.1.
The duo had previously peaked at no.2 with "Get Lucky", featuring Pharrell Williams, in 2013. The album also features another track collaboration with Daft Punk – "I Feel It Coming", a homage to MJ’s style.
The refreshing track kicks off with signature Daft Punk static that gives way to a smooth hip-hop beat. The velvety vocals of The Weeknd come through and truth be told you’d probably listen to the song a couple of times, just because you like how it sounds.
And then try to figure the lyrics after. The lyrics are fantastical pure braggadocio with references to the 3 uber luxe cars he owns! Starboy is Jamaican slang for an extravagant celebrity.
The song simmers with Weeknd’s exaggerated version of a celebrity, almost like he blames society and his fans for his extravagant life, for turning him into a Starboy. The Weeknd did whet the anticipation of fans for this new single leading upto the release.
He deleted all the posts from his earlier Instagram account, created a new one to introduce the Starboy album cover and title track, shorn of his trademark locks. The caption read "I come alive in the fall time" – thus hinting at a reincarnation.
Starboy has gone multi-platinum in many countries and has sold over 3 million units. The music video is directed by Grant Singer who previously directed his videos for no.1 Billboard Hot 100 singles "The Hills" and "Can’t Feel My Face".
Both these singes are from his highly successful 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness.
In the video Weeknd’s Starboy alter ego kills his original avatar and then proceeds to destroy all the awards he received earlier for Beauty Behind the Madness with a Star Wars lightsaber-like neon cross. The car he rides out in at the end of the video is his very own McLaren P1.
Starboy album follows Beauty Behind the Madness, Weeknd’s no.1 hit in both the US and UK, with the single "Can’t Feel My Face" going platinum around the world.
In an interview with the WSJ, Weeknd says he chose to hit the studio rather than go on tour after the success (and awards) of his last album. The result is the 18-track Starboy album.
He further reveals that the title of the album & lead single are in homage to the David Bowie song "Starman", the lead single of Bowie’s iconic 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
He said, “I just love Bowie, I think he’s the ultimate inventor.” Weeknd also credits Prince for being another influence on his music.
"Starboy" has more than 916 million views on YouTube with 4 million likes, with a steady stream of unique views, this could be The Weeknd's first video to reach 1 Billion views in less than 45 days of posting this blog.

I'm tryna put you in the worst mood, ah

All red Lamb’ just to tease you, ah

Main bitch out your league too, ah
Side bitch out of your league too, ah
House so empty, need a centerpiece
20 racks a table cut from ebony
She cut that ivory into skinny pieces
Then she clean it with her face man I love my baby
You talking money, need a hearing aid
You talking bout me, I don't see a shade
Switch up my style, I take any lane
I switch up my cup, I kill any pain
Look what you've done
I’m a motherfuckin' starboy
Look what you've done
I'm a motherfuckin' starboy
Every day a nigga try to test me, ah
Every day a nigga try to end me, ah
Pull off in that Roadster SV, ah
Pockets overweight, gettin' hefty, ah
Coming for the king, that's a far cry, ah

We don't pray for love, we just pray for cars
