"Good Time" was a perfectly timed release that would benefit both the artists, Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Written by Adam Young,Brain Lee and Matt Thiessen of Owl city, the song was released on the 12th of June 2012 as a second track in Carly Rae's 2012 album Kiss.
"Good Time" was supposed to augment Carly's "Call Me Maybe" the lead single from Kiss, as it was seated comfortably at the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for the fourth consecutive week.
But it failed to gain any traction as it faded off the charts after peaking at the 8th spot in Billboard Hot 100 charts in the third week of July 2012.
The song however was released as a lead single for Owl City's 2012 album The Midsummer Station, but sold only a 100,000 copies in the U.S far below their 2009 platinum album Ocean Eyes, which was a huge hit in the States.
The lead single "Fireflies" from Ocean Eyes (Owl City's 2009 album) was downloaded more than 4.53 million times online, while Carly Rae's "Call Me Maybe" was slightly less in numbers with 4.37 million downloads.
But still created history as the longest charted single at the no.1 spot of the Billboard Hot 100 charts by any Canadian singer, ever.
While "Call Me Maybe" pushed "Good Time" to the no.1 spot in many countries other than U.S, including Canada, New Zealand..it also gained significance as it was Owl City's only second top ten hit in the U.S, 3 years after "Fireflies" reached the 5th spot in the Billboard Hot 100 charts around last week of July 2009.
Along with the success came the trouble as American singer Allyson Nichole Burnett aka Ally Cupcake filed a legal claim on "Good Time" with a lawsuit on every member of Owl City, Carly Rae, her Record Label BMI and everybody else associated with composing and realizing the song.
After much persuasion Allyson dropped the lawsuit when BMI Records agreed to pay Allyson $800,000 in royalties, kept in a joint escrow account of all the three singers Carly Rae,Owl City and Ally Cupcake..if proven right after a high-profile unofficial investigation by BMI Records and other composers of Allyson and her record label.
Allyson Nichole lost the case as well as the unofficial investigation, with the majority of the escrow amount credited to Owl City's account.
