Mission: Impossible is a 1996 Hollywood blockbuster directed by Brian De Palma and produced by the protagonist Tom Cruise. His character Ethan Hunt has been tasked with a mission to uncover the mole who tries to frame him for murdering his own IMF team members.
The star cast of this flick includes many well-known faces including Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas,Vanessa Redgrave and many more.
The film went on to become a huge commercial success as well as a critic’s favourite, by becoming the third highest-grossing film of 1996, with some calling Mission: Impossible the American version of James Bond movies.
The success of this film resulted in four more sequels to the original movie while in-numerous flicks have their themes based on the Mission: Impossible series.
Even though the movie’s budget was a mere $80 million, it went on to earn more than $450 million, almost 5 times it’s original budget.
The Story Begins
Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, a professional spy with an assignment to prevent the theft of a secret computer file that contains code names as well as the real identities of all of USA’s secret double agents.
They don’t just have to stop that guy, but have to catch him in the act of stealing the information by means of a video footage or a photograph, then follow him until he passes the information forward, catching him red handed with no bloodshed.
The whole sequence of the thrilling chase and the amazing storyline features Cold War spy crafts, exploding cars, shootings, secret agents in disguise and largely centres on the diplomatic reception in Prague.
Plot
After being termed as a fugitive, Hunt bands together a group of renegades and embarks on a series of double crosses which lead to high-tech action sequences.
Most of the film revolves around a missing disk with the most famous scene being of Hunt’s efforts to retrieve it from a well-alarmed and secure room in headquarters of CIA.
The betrayal and back stabbing of agents by means of using a facial mask of another agent was one of the highlights of this movie.
Verdict
This is an all-time classic and one of the best movies ever produced. If you weren’t already a fan of MI series, after watching this movie, you’ll surely be a dedicated fan.
Filled with high-tech stunts and thrilling chases, it has an excellent plot and all the actors have lived up to this film’s billing.
