Overview
This amazon prime video is a 2015 3D live-action and animated comedy film that was inspired by the TV series SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s the sequel to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004). This movie was directed by the Paul Tibbitt who was the former showrunner of the Nickelodeon show-runner. Mike Mitchell directed the live-action sequences. It’s the second film in the series and the first one Paramount Animation produced. The movie stars Antonio Bandearas and also features the regular voice cast who worked on the TV show and first movie.
The story is based on a pirate named Burger-Beard. He steals the secret formula for the Krabby Patty by using a magic book that makes any text written on it come to life. This requires SpongeBob and his friends to travel to the ocean’s surface in order to get the formula back from Burger-Beard.
The movie’s last act puts the characters in a world of live-action. The scenes were shot in Georgia including Savannah and Tybee Island. The filming took place in October and November 2013. The movie is dedicated to the actor Ernest Borgnine who passed away in 2012. The movie was released in February 2015 and grossed #323 million globally with a $74 million budget. A third SpongeBob movie will be released in August 2019.

Plot Summary
When selecting among the various amazon prime videos available it’s important to know the plot. In Sponge out of Water a pirate known as Burger-Beard goes to Bikini Atoll. That’s where he finds a magical book that can turn any text written on it into reality. The magical book tells about SpongeBob SquarePants and his several adventures in Bikini Bottom.
SpongeBob likes his job working as a burger cook at the Krusty Krab fast food restaurant. He works for Mr. Krabs preparing Krabby Patties. For many years SpongeBob has protected the secret formula for Krabby Patties from his nemesis Plankton. He’s the owner of a rival restaurant named Chum Bucket.
Plankton tries to steal the Krusty Krab formula one day. Then after a battle that includes food and condiments Plankton pretends to surrender. A fake Plankton gives Mr. Krabs a fake penny that he hides inside so he can access Mr. Krab’s vault. Plankton then steals the burger’s formula and puts a fake one in the vault. When SpongeBob catches him the two fight for the formula that then vanishes.
Since the formula is gone Krabby Patties can’t be made. This causes customers to be very hungry. SpongeBob actually thinks Plankton is innocent and builds a big soap bubble so they can fly away. One page of the magic book lands where Sandy Cheeks lives.
SpongeBob’s plan is for him and Plankton to work as a team to find the formula. The two of them go back in time to the time when the formula hadn’t disappeared yet. They go to Chum Bucket to rescue Plankton’s wife Karen. They build a time machine then get the formula. However, they learn it’s the fake one put there by Plankton.
The team learns that Burger-Beard is selling Krabby patties at a food truck. Burger Beard then explains how he stole the burger formula using the book and send the team to Pelican Island. However, SpongeBob uses the magic book’s page to turn him and his friends into superheroes. They’re able to destroy the book. SpongeBob/Plankton plan a final attack to get the formula back.
Background
SpongeBob SquarePants is a Nickelodeon animated TV series with 11 seasons and over 200 episodes. Hillenburg started developing the TV series in 1996. The original name of the show was “SpongeBoy Ahoy!” The showed premiered in July 1999. The show has received positive reviews since its premiere and has won several awards including Emmy Awards.
This is one of the Amazon movies that’s also a sequel. After the first SpongeBob movie in 2004, the producer stated that there probably wouldn’t be a sequel. The movie’s production was finally announced a decade later in June 2014 with the title The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie 2. The TV show’s creator Stephen Hillenburg stated in 2012 that he was helping to write the second movie. The movie’s production was projected to be completed in November 2014. After it ended Hillenburg returned as the TV show’s executive producer.
Release/Reception
Sponge out of Water earned a total $25.1 million in worldwide revenue with a budget of $74 million. That includes nearly $163 million in North America and about $162 in other global markets. It earned more than the first SpongeBob movie that earned $140.2 million globally. The show had a net profit of about $99.8 million when factoring all of the movie’s expense/revenues.
The movie earned an approval rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 100 reviews. It’s also earned a score of 62/100 at Metacritic. The movie received some criticism that included the movie’s length and CGI sequences. However, it was projected the movie would be popular among certain demographics include grade-schoolers.
