Just the thought that you are going to see an Adam Sandler movie where he is going to save the world already spells comedy to those who really know him.
However, many moviegoers were not convinced about it, which is why it flopped. If you want to learn more about the movie, read through. If you don’t want spoilers, go watch it either on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
Plot
The movie opens in the year 1982 at a video game arcade where the young Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler) with his friend Will Cooper (Kevin James) are playing. Sam Brenner discovered that he is able to master the video games simply by spotting the patterns.
He participated in a video game play championship, wherein he loses the match with a disagreeable arcade player named Eddie Plant in a game Donkey Kong.
A footage of the event, together with other events are videotaped and was sent in a time capsule for the purpose of sending a message to any lifeforms there are outside of the Earth or beyond the galaxy.
However, they did not realize that the message was taken in a wrong way.33 years after the event, Sam Brenner works as an installer for home theater systems, while his friend Cooper is the President of the United States.
While in Guam, a US military base got attacked by UFOs with the same appearance that of the video game Galaga wherein it turns the base into pieces of small glowing cubes. One of the soldiers in the base even got abducted.
Sam Brenner got called to go to the White House while he was working at the divorcee home of Violet with her son Matty. He was surprised as Violet also got a call to be there as the lieutenant colonel.
When the two witnessed the video footage of what happened and had a meeting with Ludlow Lamonsoff, Sam’s new friend during the video game tournament, Sam came to a conclusion that the time capsule sent to space was seen as a declaration of war against them and that they are attacking Earth with a spacecraft that resembled most of the classic video games that they used to play.
This conclusion got affirmed when the television broadcast wherein the Earth received a challenge into a battle. The conditions state that if the aliens were to win 3 rounds, they will invade Earth.
Cooper and Sam were not able to stop one of the alien attacks as the Arkanoid paddled the balls of light, hitting Taj Mahal and even abducted another individual.
Ludlow and Brenner trained the Navy SEALs to play the old video games. Violet created cannons that can penetrate the enemies. While these happened, London got attacked by the aliens in the shape of the character from the Centipede game.
The soldiers in the area were having difficulty defeating the enemies, Ludlow and Brenner stepped in and defeated them.
After the victory, the aliens send a congratulatory trophy to the humans in the shape of a dog from the video game Duck Hunt to an old lady, who once appeared earlier in the scene during the attack in London.
Cooper and Ludlow had to make plans, so they decided to visit and retrieve Eddie, the guy who championed the video game tournament during the start of the movie.
He was serving his sentence in prison for the case of fraud. The team then discovers in New York City that they must participate being ghosts to face Pac-Man, just like how the video game Pac-Man is played.
The scene introduces Toru Iwatani, played as himself and also the creator of the video game Pac-Man, where he faces against Pac-Man, too. He wanted to console and convince himself that Pac-Man is not a bad guy, but then he fled the scene after his hand got bitten off by Pac-Man.
It all came down to Sam, Eddie, and Ludlow to do the job at hand by using the Mini Cooper cars. However, Violet noticed something odd about the way Eddie behaved, seeing that his car moved at great supersonic speeds around the game board.
They were able to win the Q*Bert as their trophy, but then the aliens declared later that someone cheated in the game, further stating that the contest is forfeited.
Matty, Violet’s son, was the one who discovered the speed cheat Eddie used on the Mini Cooper, thus it was revealed that he really did cheat in the game.
As the mother ship of the aliens appeared in the scene, Eddie fled, but Matty got captured by the enemy aliens.
The aliens swore revenge against Earth for cheating by launching one massive attack using all the characters from various classic video games and unleashing all of them in Washington D.C. Cooper then joins the team and on the other side, Ludlow chose to stay and fight.
One of the aliens took the form of Lady Lisa right in front of Cooper, a character that he had a crush on during his childhood.
Ludlow tries to persuade Lady Lisa in choosing love, which made the latter side of the humans. Then came Eddie that wishes to make amends for what he has done earlier, returned in the fight, too.
Violet, Cooper, and Brenner are then summoned to the alien’s mother ship wherein they are facing their leader that took the form of Donkey Kong. The captives of the aliens were right on top.
As the group evades one barrel and fireball after another, Sam felt hopeless and depressed, up until Matty revealed to him that Eddie cheated in one of the games against the aliens.
This has brought him hope again. He threw a hammer to Donkey Kong that ended the aliens and self-destructs them.
Naturally, as a movie about saving the Earth from destruction, the team were hailed as heroes. A peace agreement was made with the aliens, too.
Author's Review
Seeing the film for the first time through Netflix, although it is also viewable on Amazon Prime Video, I cannot say for certain that the film is worth watching.
There is a lot of cringe-worthy scenes going on, but if you want to lighten up your mood without expecting anything, it is worth to watch just to pass time.
