Summary of the Movie:
Connie Sumner, played by Diane Lane, has everything to be happy about: a loving and professionally successful husband, who is played by the actor Richard Gere, with whom she has already lived 11 years of marriage, a lovely son, and a spacious house in an affluent and tranquil suburb of New York.
On a windy day in Manhattan, she falls and injures her knee. She is rescued by a young Frenchman, Paul Martel, antique book dealer, who cares for her in her loft in the district of SoHo. At first faithful to her husband, she resists the masculine charm of the seducer. But between desire and remorse, she finally gives in to desire and commits the irreparable.
Edward realizes that his wife becomes distant to him. He decides to hire a private detective, Frank Wilson, portrayed by Dominic Chianese, who confirms his infidelity. Edward decides to find Paul in his apartment where he has a cold explanation with the young man.
While he is looking around the place, he finds something that he realizes he had given Connie in the past. This object is the snow globe that he had given her on the previous anniversary of their wedding After Paul tells Edward that it was Connie that gave it to him they have a fight, Paul then loses his footing and then cracks his skull.
Edward regains his composure and, as he erases his fingerprints, hears a message from his wife left on Paul's answering machine, telling her that she is ending their relationship because she is hurting her family too much. Edward erases the messages, wraps the body in a carpet, transports it to the trunk of his car and leaves it in a landfill.
Paul's family reports his disappearance. Two police inspectors found Connie's phone number in the loft and a week later his body. When they ask her how she met him, she claims that she met him at a charity sale, which corroborates her husband, much to his surprise.
Connie understands that her husband is protecting her when she unexpectedly discovers the photos of Detective Frank Wilson and realizes that he is the murderer when she finds the snowball in her own home. She asks him for explanations but he gets angry, revealing that it was her that he wanted to kill, not Paul.
In the next few days, Connie had found out that there is a hidden section in the snow globe in which there are photograph of her, Edward, and their baby Charlie, with a message of love from Edward, not to open until their twenty-fifth year of their marriage.
She then tries to burn their pictures, and then he says that he will contact the police for their crimes. Connie refuses, saying that they are the only ones who know the truth and those they will get by. Their family seems to be returning to a normal life.
One night in the car, while Charlie sleeps in the back seat, Connie offers Edward to disappear in Mexico and change his life. The latter seems to accept. The final scene shows their car to near a light near a police station, suggesting that they will still live under the threat that their crime will be discovered in the future.
