Hold Me Now - The Thompson Twins(#ad)

If Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" was one of the cheesiest song of the 90s, then Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now" would be the 'hopelessly in love' song of the 80s.

Composed, written and sung by the British band & couple Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie for Thompson Twins, "Hold Me Now" not only united the couple, who were on the verge of a break-up but earned them fame, money, recognition, respect and honor across the globe.

Bailey the lead male vocal for this song.. begs, pleads and reasons with his girl friend Alannah Currie, asking her not to leave him but hold him, forgive him, love him and stay with him for the rest of his life in spite of his repeated mistakes.

The song peaked at the 4th spot in the U.K charts, spent more than 500 days on the MTV airwaves in the U.S, becoming the band's signature song.

Selling more than 3 million copies across the globe, this was Thompson Twins best selling single to date beating some of their other well known hits including "Doctor Doctor", "You Take Me Up" and "Lay Your Hands On Me".

Named after the fictional detective characters from Tintin, Thompson Twins evolved from a Synthpop - New wave band of the 80s to an alternative rock band of the 90s and even changed their name of Babble to sync with the 90s generation.

The song as well became the band’s highest charting single when it was released in the United States during February 1984.

It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured it's position on the chart for twenty one weeks.

During 1984, the song topped the Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart for a week.

"Hold Me Now" is a new wave, synthpop ballad which has been performed with a swaying and hypnotic groove.

The sound of Marimba is featured in the background which makes it a mesmerizing composition.Moving at a moderate tempo of 120 beats per minute.

The vocal range of Bailey spans for more than two and half octaves. Most of the songs released by the band feature a dance-oriented music.

However, “Hold Me Now” features mainstream piano-based melody. Latin percussion and prominent bass line has been maintained in the song.

After the commercial success of their fourth album, Quick Step and Side Kick Side Kicks, which went platinum in the U.K, Thompson Twins collaborated with producer Alex Sadkin again for recording Into the Gap in the Bahamas at Compass Point Studios during the summer of 1982 to create an album which will sell more than 5 million copies across the globe.

Bailey had a strong idea about the song “Hold Me Now” and it was written quite quickly.Bailey said that he was nervous, excited as well as over-prepared while recording the song.

He had decided the instruments that he would be utilizing and the band was successful in recording the song within three days. The song was remixed before release at RAK studios by Sadkin.

Bailey commented that a great producer is one who has great ideas and invest them in creating good records.

With the song topping the charts in America, the band was under pressure to produce top selling music and they were not comfortable with pressure mounting on them.

One of the band members stated that with "Hold Me Now" becoming a huge hit all over the world, several managers and music companies tries to harass them to come up with "Hold Me Now" Part 2. They were forced to come up with a successful formula.

The song originally received a mixed response from the critics.

While reviewing the album Into the Gap, a critic from Rolling Stones magazine stated that the band has taken a drastic and new tangent with "Hold Me Now".

In a review written by The Village Voice, Robert Christgau stated that the song is a classic that approaches a heart-tugging mastery.

The song received positive reviews two decades later. A critic from Allmusic commented that the song sounds innocent and fresh years later it's release.

 I have a picture

 Pinned to my wall

An image of you and of me

And we're laughing and loving it all

 Look at our life now

 We're tattered and torn

 We fuss and we fight

 And delight in the tears

 that we cry until dawn

 Hold me now,

 (Warm) warm my heart

 Stay with me

 Let loving start

 Let loving start

 You say I'm a dreamer

 We're two of a kind

 Both of us searching

 For some perfrct world

 We know we'll never find

So perhaps I should leave here

 Yeah, yeah. go far away

But you know that there's no where

That I'd rather be than with you here today

 Oh-whooa

 Oh-whooa-oh-oh

 Hold me now

 Oooh, warm my heart

 Stay with me

 Let loving start

 Let loving start

 Oh-whooa

 Hold me now

 Oooh, warm my heart

 Stay with me

 Let loving start

 Let loving start

 Whooa, whooa-oooooooh

You ask if I love you

 Well what can I say

 You know that I do

And if this is just one of those games

 That we play

So I'll sing you a new song

 Please don't cry anymore

And then I'll ask your forgiveness

 Though I don't know

Just what I'm asking it for

 Oh-whooa
 Oh-whooa-oh-whoa-oh

 Hold me now

Hold me in your loving arms

 Oooh, warm my heart

(Oh, my cold and tired heart)

Stay with me (stay with me)

 Let loving start
