Alicia Keys - Songs In A Minor(#ad)
Back in the early 2000s there were two Columbias destined to change the life of a young teen called Alicia Keys, who had just graduated from an Arts school with high grades at a tender age of 16.
One was Columbia University and the other was Columbia Records, even though they were owned by different entities, they were the best in business and still are.
Columbia Records owned by Sony Music Entertainment has all the biggest names in the music industry signed to it, including Michael Jackson, Adele,Beyoncé and many more.Columbia University is an ivy league university established almost 300 years ago.
Not many get an offer from the Columbias especially if you are a high school graduate with no experience, unless you are an Alicia Keys who would win 15 Grammys and sell 31 million records in the next 10 years.
Alicia Keys wanted a gig with both the Columbias, so she signed a contract with Columbia Records apart from joining Columbia University as a full time student, which lasted for 3 weeks.
Her biggest hit with Columbia Records was for the 1997 movie Men In Black "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)" unfortunately this would be her last single with Columbia Records till date.
Her contract with Columbia Records ended when they rejected her album created by their own producers.Years after her success Alicia Keys would confess on many interviews on how she fell out with producers at Columbia Records after the success of "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)".
The bitter dispute with Columbia Records made Alicia Keys realize that she would never be able to release a single album with Columbia Records ever again and she desperately tried to end her Contract.
Knowing her potential Clive Davis, the well known American record executive who pushed Whitney Houston to prominence, bailed Alicia Keys from her existing contract with Columbia Records, welcoming her to Artista Records where he was the CEO.
When Artista Records figured out that Clive Davis is planning to start his own record label, they fired him prompting Clive to launch his own record company J Records label without any delays.
A broke, rejected Alicia Keys was then transferred to Clive Davis' J Records with absolute freedom to use any resource, studio or artist of her choice signed to J Records.
Alicia Keys spent close to 3 years perfecting, rehearsing her songs again and again with confidant Clive Davis by her side. The songs were finally released on July 2001 while the recordings started mid 1998.
