Aqua - Greatest Hits(#ad)
Aqua Greatest Hits collection includes their biggest hit ever "Barbie Girl" which not only topped the charts all over the globe but resulted in a bitter lawsuit between MCA Records, Aqua's record label and the makers of Barbie Doll, Mattel inc.
Released in 1997 , "Barbie Girl" was Aqua's first U.K no.1 hit.It reached the no.1 spot in most European countries debuting at the 7th position in Billboard Hot 100 U.S charts.
Selling close to 2 million tracks in the United Kingdom, "Barbie Girl" would be dumped by music television channels across the globe with many calling it the 'worst song ever'.
Despite the dumping given by the mainstream media and critics "Barbie Girl" was a huge hit among teens everywhere, earning them a superstar status in less than a week of the song's release.
Mattel inc creators of the Barbie Doll were not so pleased with the success of "Barbie Girl", called the lyrics profane and extremely explicit, even though the word 'explicit' was not mentioned in the cover of the 1997 Aqua album Aquarium.
Eventually, late 2000 they filed a Copyright lawsuit against MCA Records for using this phrase in their lyrics "I'm a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world." as well other phrases including...
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
I'm a blond bimbo girl, in a fantasy world
Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dolly
Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky
Mattel alleged that the lyrics are best suited for the promotion of an adult toy rather a child's doll. They however lost the lawsuit and filed a new one in 2002.
Claiming millions of dollars from MCA Records, which in turn sued Mattel Inc for defaming the band Aqua (which broke up after the initial lawsuit).
When a Californian judge nullified both the lawsuits. An infuriated Mattel Inc has been using "Barbie Girl" tune since 2007 for many of their Barbie Doll promotions.
Aqua got themselves into another controversy when they released their second single "Doctor Jones", a theme based on the Indiana Jones movies owned by The Walt Disney Company.
Thankfully Disney never filed a lawsuit against Aqua for using Doctor Jones a patented character of The Walt Disney Company.
"Doctor Jones" also helped Aqua shed their much hated tag 'one hit wonders' which was used widely after the "Barbie Girl" hit.Released in the holiday season of 1997 from Sydney Australia.
"Doctor Jones" swept away every other song including Mariah Carey's Christmas songs to become the no.1 hit in Australia through out the holiday season.
Culminating in a seven consecutive week at the no.1 spot in the Australian charts before it was finally over thrown by the epic "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion.
Aquarium had many more hit songs including "My Oh My" ,"Lollipop (Candyman)","Roses Are Red", "Turn Back Time" which all chartered in the top 100 of the Billboard U.S charts.Aqua took a break for a few months and released Aquarius mid 2000.
Aquarius was a total fiasco which eventually led to the disintegration of the band Aqua mid 2001.Not even a single song from their 2000 album charted in the Billboard Hot 100 including their crown jewel "Cartoon Heroes".
But that does not take away the fact they still are the most popular Danish band, even in 2016 and have sold more than 32 million copies worldwide.
Aqua fans were more than disappointed but never knew the reason behind the bands unexplained mediocre music in the form of Aquarius.Even though no formal explanation was given from the band apart from the usual cliches such as 'we lost the spark'.
It was not long ago before the news broke out that the band members of Aqua were caught in a love triangle, with both the men, male vocalist René Dif, keyboard player Søren Rasted have fallen in love with leading lady vocalist Lene Nystrøm.
And this resulted in their mediocre album called Aquarius with many critics poking fun at them suggesting they should have gone for a movie based on their love triangle instead of releasing Aquaris.
Aqua reunited in 2007 releasing their album Megalomania and in 2009, they released one of their best singles in more than a decade "Back To The 80's".
