Heart -These Dreams(#ad)
When Stevie Nick of Fleetwood Mac rejected song writer Martin Pages original composition for "These Dreams", not even in her wildest dreams would she have thought that the song she rejected would rule the Billboard charts for the month of March 1986.
Not only did the song reach the no.1 spot in the Billboard Hot 100 charts (on March 22nd,1986).. it has since become Heart's signature song for a variety of reasons.
It was the first time Nancy Wilson sang the lead vocals since the band was formed in 1967 and it was Heart's first Billboard Hot 100 single since it's inception almost 20 years ago.
Released on January 18th 1986, from their self-titled album, Heart, "These Dreams" was Nancy Wilson's tribute to her bestie Sharon Hess, a loyal fan of Nancy Wilson , who died of leukemia shortly before the release of "These Dreams", on Nancy's birthday.
Nancy and Sharon got so close..during Sharon's last days, Nancy Wilson called Sharon..her 'soulmate of the sea'.
Sharon was so much into Nancy that she spent her last days in the studio, where they were recording "These Dreams", living her dream...adoring and admiring Nancy. And she even spent her last moments creating a handmade guitar especially for Nancy.
The song is based on the theme of a fantasy world, a person ventures into... when they are faced with predicaments in life.
It mentions a lady who lives in a world of fantasy that happens every time she goes to sleep. She can’t always determine what is or isn’t real in the world.
That lady in the fantasy world is Sharon, and the song is all about traversing from the physical world to the spiritual world (fantasy land).
Nancy Wilson suffered from a cold during the day of recording this song and her voice was all but raw, crude and unrefined.
After watching the phenomenal success of "These Dreams", many Producers earnestly hoped and prayed that Nancy will catch a cold, every time she records a song.
The song was specially chosen as a dedication to Sharon Hess, as it was the only song ever sang by Nancy Wilson as a lead vocalist, instead of her sister Ann Wilson.
Not everybody was pleased with the song's theme...the Canadian quintet were torn apart by the critics who minced no words in attributing the song to drugs and dizzy feeling one gets, under the influence of drugs.
Nevertheless, the album sold 5 million copies in the U.S and another 2 million across the globe... bringing into spotlight the long forgotten Canadian rock band Heart.
Thanks to MTV, a re-invented Heart was able to harmonize with the 80s generation through their innovative rock music without 'n roll' and highly effective, colorful music videos filled with smoke and hi-tech guitars.
"These Dreams" hit the coveted no. 1 spot on the Canadian Adult contemporary charts, US Billboard Hot 100 and US Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts.
Occupied 2nd spot in the US Billboard mainstream rock chart, 3rd spot on French singles chart and 6th on Canadian singles chart.
Heart - These Dreams - Lyrics
Release Date - January 18th 1986
Album - Heart
Spare a little candle
Save some light for me
Figures up ahead
Moving in the trees
White skin in linen
Perfume on my wrist
And the full moon that hangs over
These dreams in the mist
Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands
I want to see you clearly
Come closer than this
But all I remember
Are the dreams in the mist
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
Is it cloak 'n' dagger
Could it be spring or fall
I walk without a cut
Through a stained glass wall
Weaker in my eyesight
The candle in my grip
And words that have no form
Are falling from my lips
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
There's something out there
I can't resist
I need to hide away from the pain
There's something out there
I can't resist
The sweetest song is silence
That I've ever heard
Funny how your feet
In dreams never touch the earth
In a wood full of princes
Freedom is a kiss
But the prince hides his face
From dreams in the mist
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
