"It Wasn't Me" is a song by Shaggy a Jamaican-American singer-songwriter and DJ. This is one of his best and most popular singles of all time.
He was born Orville Richard Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica on October 22, 1968, and is well known as Shaggy his stage name.
It was in the Marine Corps where Shaggy perfected his signature singing voice. He enlisted to serve in the United States Marine Corps and served in the 10th Marine Regiment during the Persian Gulf War.
In the Marines, he was reduced in rank twice, and the highest rank he achieved was lance corporal. Shaggy decided to pursue his career in music in 1993 when he released his first hit “Oh Carolina.”
He released an album Hot Shot in 2000, and it was certified six times Platinum in the United States, and it was the album that featured the song "It Wasn't Me."
The song "It Wasn't Me" also features vocals from Rikrok, an English Jamaican singer. This track was Shaggy’s breakthrough in the pop market and is his highest ranking song to date.
The lyrics of the song are about a man asking his friend for advice after his girlfriend caught him red-handed having sex with another woman and his friend advises him to deny everything hence the phrase “It wasn’t me”.
The song topped the chart in the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, France, and Austria. It became the best-selling single in 2001 in the UK and sold over 1.15 million copies that year.
And as of 2017, the song had sold over 1.42 million copies. The song was also nominated for the Grammy awards for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
The music video for the song which was directed by Stephen Scott now has more than 2.8 million views on YouTube.
There was a video which circulated online once, and the song is termed to be one of Michael Jackson’s favorite songs, which he doesn’t deny since Michael was in the crowd (during a Live performance) but he shakes his head to agree with Shaggy as he performs the song.
