As a second single the album memories…do not open by The Chainsmokers and the first single from Coldplay’s Kaleidoscope, the song attracted an outstanding remix recorded in Tokyo and the live version released on June 23, 2017.
After the Chainsmokers shared their idea of an upcoming song on September 2016, the track found it's way on Spotify prematurely featuring vocals from Chris Martin and it scored a place during the Miss USA 2017 swimsuit competition.
Other than waiting for a fairytale, the track portrays an individual’s desire to meet a real partner instead of an imaginary hero;a relationship that doesn’t have to be perfect like in fairytales or humanly impossible to achieve.
On February 22, 2017, a lyric video was released on the Chainsmokers YouTube channel, Vevo. Having been directed by James Zwaldo, the track attracted over 700 milion views.
Later, a second music video for the Tokyo Remix found its way to the world on June 23, 2017. The hit song became number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 but leveled up to number five in a matter of two weeks after being released.
Having sold 988,000 copies in the US, "Something Just Like This" has scored the third place on Hot 100 becoming the Chainsmokers’ third top-five entry and Coldplay’s second top five entry on the Billboard.
On February 24,2017, the United Kingdom ranked the song number 30 but it became second in a matter of one week where it maintained its position on top ten tracks for nine consecutive weeks.
The Chainsmokers and Coldplay premiered something just like this on February 22, 2017, live on the Brit Awards in London.
Another live performance followed March 5 at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards in Inglewood, California and in Singapore; Coldplay performed the track while on their tour, A Head Full of Dreams Tour.
As an inspiration, "Something Just Like This" was performed by Coldplay at the One Love Manchester benefit concert to reach the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena Bombing.
