ENIGMA Mea Culpa(#ad)
Enigma, the German trance band had ‘Mea Culpa (Part II)’ released in the month of April, 1991. Sung in Latin, French and a few English words in the chorus, "Mea Culpa" means ‘I accept the blame or I take the responsibility’.
Released from their 1991 album MCMXC.a.D., the track may not be as popular as "Return to Innocence" or "Sadeness", but ruled the charts for a long time in Australia, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland."Mea Culpa" was also certified Gold in France for selling more than 150,000 copies.
Michael Cretu, the Romanian–German musical genius, dj artist and a producer was instrumental in composing and releasing all the songs in MCMXC a.D. including "Mea Culpa" along with David Fairstein and Frank Peterson.
MCMXC.a.D signifies the year 1991 in roman numeral followed by the abbreviation Anno Domini as it connects to the year on which the album was launched.
This album was success all over the world reaching the top charts in more than ten countries. It was a number one hit in U.S and UK too.
"Mea Culpa" was released along with other three songs which are "Sadeness(Part I)", "Principles of Lust" and "The Rivers of Belief" from this album as it sold 4 million copies worldwide and ruled the Billboard 200 charts for nearly five years.
By the end of 1994 they had managed to sell 14 million copies and received total of 60 platinum awards.
The uniqueness of Enigma lies in the songs like "Mea Culpa (Part II)" and "Sadeness (Part I)" which is actually a blend of Gregorian chants along with the musical dance beats.
Michael Cretu, the founder of Enigma, before forming project Enigma had sung few solo songs and had worked with various artists, launched albums for his wife, well known German pop singer Sandra.
Cretu has recorded this album at A.R.T Studio which was a home recording studio in Spain.
This was his first album at this studio and he decided to add on freshness and new era music to his project which he named Enigma.
Enigma stands for something mysterious and puzzling which suits perfectly for Cretu’s music which as he stated did not obey old rules and habits presenting a new form of artistic expression with mysterious components.
This was his experiment at music which turned successful and flourished well among the audience.
In native Germany, the song reached the peak position of number 7. It was good for a single to get so much of appreciation. But Enigma’s "Sadeness", the first single was unmatchable.
“Mea Culpa” rose to numerous Charts but failed to match the success of "Sadeness".
The music video for “Mea Culpa” has more than 8.4 million views on YouTube and as the word Enigma flashes on the screen, a sexy female voice asks the viewers to.. "Turn off the lights, take a deep breath...Relax" when a unique chant starts to play as a naked blonde women stretches her hands as the shadow of a Pentagram flashes on her.
As the chant fades away a super-sexy female voice sings and moans in French. Many fans confided that song makes them super horny and is a perfect match for slow sex.
Not many fans are aware that Enigma used Hypnotic Trance music for the “Mea Culpa” track, which is very frequently used for meditation and treating depression.
In the middle of the video as the chants begin, shadows of bullock carts with a woman in white standing on the bullock cart's enclosure as soldiers follow them, appears through the smoke.
Understanding the video is like decoding a cryptic message written by an ancient monk in his pre-historic monastery. The video tries to mix spirituality and sexuality..something similar to Kamasutra written by ancient Sanskrit vedic scholars.
As profound as it may sound, the video is by no means a mystery solved and the audio sounds very much like Madonna's "Justify My Love" released on October 1990, six months before “Mea Culpa” hit the Record Stores (April, 1991).
It is still unclear why the background composition for both the songs sound awfully similar and why were they released with less than 6 months gap between them, as Michael Cretu's worst nightmare, the Copyright Claims..came alive to haunt him again.
The demons of Copyright Claims followed Michael Cretu for “Mea Culpa”, as they did for "Sadeness", by the same company Capella Antiqua, a Munich,Germany based choir.
Cretu did settle both the Copyright Claims by giving Capella Antiqua their due credit & compensation wherever necessary but his image was tarnished beyond any repair.

Kyrie eleison
Christe eleison
Je ne dors plus
(the time has come)
Je te desire
(the time has come)
Prends moi
Je suis a toi
Mea culpa
Je veux aller au bout de me fantasmes
Je sais que c'est interdit
Je suis folle
Je m'abandonne
Mea culpa
Kyrie eleison
Christe eleison
Je suis la et ailleurs
Je n'ai plus rien
Je deviens folle
Je m'abandonne
Mea culpa
Je ne dors plus
Je te desire
Prends-moi
Je suis a toi
Kyrie eleison
Christe eleison
Je suis la et ailleurs
Je veux tout
Quand tu veux
Comme tu veux
Mea culpa
Kyrie eleison
English Translation -
Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
I can't sleep anymore
(The time has come)
I desire you
(The time has come)
Take me
I'm yours
I'm guilty
I want to go to the end of my fantasies
I know it is forbidden
I am crazy
I am letting myself go
I'm guilty
Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
I am here and somewhere else
I have nothing more
I am becoming crazy
I am letting myself go
I'm guilty
I can't sleep anymore
I desire you
Take me
I'm yours
Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
I am here and somewhere else
I want everything,
When you want,
As you like
I'm guilty
Lord have mercy
