Released on the 4th of January of 1994,"Return To Innocence" was Enigma's second biggest hit after "Sadeness", would result in their second consecutive lawsuit,with both the lawsuits are for chanting used in "Sadeness" and "Return To Innocence".
Unlike the first lawsuit filed by Berlin based conductor Konrad Ruhland on behalf of his choir Capella Antiqua München for the Gregorian chant used in "Sadeness" which was settled by an out of court settlement for an one-time undisclosed amount.
The second lawsuit filed by a Taiwan based aboriginal group Ami's in 1998 for their 1988 recording "Jubliant Drinking Song" which was used by Enigma's Michael Cretu in "Return To Innocence" without their consent, turned out to be lethal for Cretu.
The landmark judgement would act as benchmark for similar cases in the future.
According to the judgement, the Taiwanese group received almost 80% of the sales from the song "Return To Innocence" and the entire royalty payment for the rest of their lives.
A visibly shattered Michael Cretu would later reveal in an interview that he thought "Jubliant Drinking Song" was in public domain and was free to use.
Released from their 1994 album Cross of Changes, the song would become so popular it was used in many T.V commercials, T.V shows including Man of The House and even as the one of the official songs of Summer Olympics 1996.
It was not until 1998 when Taiwan group Amí's band members Ying Nan and Hsiu Chu filed a legal claim against Michael Cretu for using their Ami's chant in "Return To Innocence", the whole world was shocked and surprised at Michael Cretu with his credibility at stake.
Nevertheless, "Return To Innocence" peaked at the top spot in more than 10 countries across the Europe, reached the 5th spot in the U.S Billboard Hot 100 charts and the top 3 in the U.K charts.
