Currents is an album by the Australian rock band Tame Impala and it is their third studio album.
It was released on July 17 2015 by Universal Music Australia and Modular Recordings in Australia, Fiction Records in Europe and Interscope Records in the United States.
The album just like two other albums by the group was written, recorded, produced and performed by Kevin Parker who was the group’s primary member.
It was the first time that Parker also mixed the music and recorded all the instruments by himself and the album featured no other collaborators.
Parker had his home studio in Fremantle where he largely started recording Currents after the release of their second album Lonerism in 2012.
He solely labored over the details of each and every song and this ultimately caused the release date to be delayed by two months.
Parker engrossed himself with writing and recording of the songs keeping with his reputation as a musical auteur.
Currents was going to be different from their second album and this was categorized by their music shifting to more dance-oriented music placing more emphasis on synthesizers than guitars which their previous music put more emphasis on.
He says he was inspired to seek change out of the desire to hear Tane Impala’s music played in dance clubs and a more communal setting.
Currents was the group’s best charting release and it debuted number one in Australia, number four in the United states and number three in the United Kingdom. Currents has sold over 120,000 copies in North America as of Dec 2015.
The album appeared on various critic’s year end list of the best albums of 2015. Currents was awarded Best Rock album and Album of the Year at the 2015 ARIA Music awards and at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, category.
