Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father(#ad)

Considered by many as Luther Vandross's signature song, "Dance With My Father" won the Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards 2004 for Vandross and Richard Marx who co-wrote the song.

Luther Vandross also won a Grammy for the Best R&B Male Vocal Performance for the same track.

As ironic as it may sound, "Dance With My Father" was one of the least promoted tracks ever to win multiple Grammy Awards and Luther Vandross never attended the Grammys to collect his award as he was hospitalized with a critical stroke on April the 16th 2003 that would end his musical career and then his life.

Some of his ardent fans still believe that the amount of energy he exerted on himself to produce the masterpiece called Dance With My Father was the sole reason for his stroke and the eventual death.

Vandross used to spend countless days and night at the J Records studio along with Richard Marx in New York city... without any sleep, trying for perfection..which resulted in him gaining hypertension with Blood Pressure levels way above the critical mark.

When Vandross was hospitalized the whole project came to a grinding halt but his record label J Records decided to go ahead with the song's release without Vandross's consent nor with any sort of promotion whatsoever.

But it still became the most requested song of 2003, as every FM radio station was flooded with teary eyes calls from listeners, who were literally begging the RJ to play "Dance With My Father" as Vandross was in a state of deep coma.

The song promoted itself on the result of Luther Vandross's hospitalization and eventual coma, as many fans feared this might be his very last song and album.

Their worst fears came true as diabetes took over Luther Vandross's body which he inherited from his father making it difficult for him to recover, infecting him with pneumonia and meningitis...almost crippling his recovery.

"Dance With My Father" is Luther's dedication to his father, who used to dance with Luther and his mom Mary before Diabetes took him away when Luther Vandross was just 7 years old and this song was a heart-felt dedication to the man who brought him to this world.

Luther Vandross did managed to cheat death after his stroke, but never sang again, even worse was that he never spoke again..like he used to.

The stroke left him bound to a wheel chair, but he did make one final appearance on the The Oprah Winfrey Show (May 6th 2004), before he passed away on the 1st of July 2005 at the New Jersey JFK Medical Center, aged 54.

 Release Date - May 30,2003

Album - Dance with My Father

Back when I was a child

Before life removed all the innocence

My father would lift me high

And dance with my mother and me

 And then

Spin me around 'till I fell asleep

Then up the stairs he would carry me

 And I knew for sure

 I was loved

If I could get another chance

 Another walk

 Another dance with him

I'd play a song that would never ever end

 How I'd love love love

To dance with my father again

 When I and my mother

 Would disagree

To get my way I would run

 From her to him

He'd make me laugh just to comfort me

 yeah yeah

 Then finally make me do

 Just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep

He left a dollar under my sheet

 Never dreamed that he

 Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance

 One final step

 One final dance with him

I'd play a song that would never ever end

Cause I'd love love love to

 Dance with my father again

Sometimes I'd listen outside her door

And I'd hear how mama would cry for him

I'd pray for her even more than me

I'd pray for her even more than me

I know I'm praying for much to much

 But could you send her

 The only man she loved

I know you don't do it usually

 But Dear Lord

She's dying to dance with my father again

 Every night I fall asleep

And this is all I ever dream
