The First Half:
The story opens with a married British couple Nigel (Hugh Grant) and Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas) who are sailing to Istanbul on a Mediterranean cruise.
On the journey, they encounter a mysterious and beautiful French woman Mimi whose character is played Emmanuelle Seigner.
Nigel gets fascinated by Mimi and he meets her when she was dancing alone in the ship’s bar. Later, Nigel meets Mimi’s husband who is a wheel chaired bound man named Oscar.
The role of Oscar is played by Peter Coyote. He is quite cynical, acerbic and failed as a writer in his life. The story further shows how the threads of relationship get entangled between these four characters.
Movie Plot :
The story further proceeds when Oscar invites Nigel in his cabin and gives him a detail about his relationship with Mimi.
He tells him that how he met Mimi in a bus in Paris and they fall in love with each other. Oscar further narrated how they explored sadomasochism, bondage and voyeurism.
Meanwhile, two new characters are introduced- A distinguished Indian gentleman Mr. Singh who is travelling with his daughter Amrita Singh.
Oscar further adds how a love and hate relationship was developed between Mimi and him. His humiliation led Mimi in a drastic condition and she started exploring sadistic fantasies at her expense.
Later on, she got pregnant and how Oscar forced her to go for abortion. Nigel lefts his cabin and meets Mimi... kisses her.
The movie accelerates with it's own pace keeping the viewers clueless about what’s going to happen next.
It will be interesting to know that how Fiona will react when she will came to know about this secret kiss and why Oscar is telling all this to Nigel.
Verdict:
Bitter Moon is an R rated movie that includes strong language, some intense erotic scenes and nudity.
This movie was not a blockbuster and didn’t experience a big commercial success.
With a gross collection of approximately $1.86 million in USA, this movie is good for all those who just love to go off the deeper end.
Bitter Moon received a mixed critic reviews and was appreciated for the music score that was composed by Vangelis.
