Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" was one of THE most promoted tracks of the 1980s,the band members themselves have admitted how lucky they were,to be signed by the U.K based EMI Records which had many subsidiaries in the U.S including Capitol Records.
Andy Taylor the lead guitarist of Duran Duran once said in an interview that EMI told Capitol Records “Listen, you’ve got to make Duran Duran happen.”
Such was the clout of EMI Records back in the 80s, they forced Capitol to release "Hungry Like the Wolf" thrice in all the radio stations throughout the U.S.
Such a thing never happened before and in Duran Duran bassist John Taylor's own words "Hungry Like the Wolf, just had to be a hit.. there is no other way".
With the recently launched MTV desperately looking for new material to promote their brand new television channel, the timing of "Hungry Like the Wolf" music video could not have been better.
Duran Duran should consider themselves real lucky by the way Capitol Recording Studios treated them,before they shocked the world by the way they ill-treated Crowded House in 1986, when it released their self-titled album which had hits like "Don't Dream it's Over"...hardly promoted by Capitol Records.
And the whole world knew how Crowded House self promoted their album by performing at bars, video stores and malls in the urban U.S.A to erk out sales.
Released on the 4th of May 1982, "Hungry Like the Wolf" would become first single to win a Grammy in the Best Music Video category in 1984.
Promoted as a lead single for their 1982 album Rio, EMI Records spent a whooping $200,000 for "Hungry Like the Wolf" music video which was shot deep in the southern jungles of Sri Lanka.
While a massive civil war was tormenting the northern parts of Sri Lanka with it's jungles infested with rebel fighters.
EMI decided to send Duran Duran to the southern part of Sri Lanka, rich in ancient Buddhist heritage, the exact place where Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft movies were shot.
Back in 1982, no western entity had guts to send their citizens to Sri Lanka worse their war infested jungles...Duran Duran never raised their voice against EMI, took the first flight to Colombo after a mini tour of Australia.
Just as expected, the video shoot of "Hungry Like the Wolf" was filled with many adventurous stories, including one..when a drunk Andy Taylor falls from a tree, when he was supposed to sing (during shooting) right into the lake where elephant's relieve themselves.
And how he would suffer for months for ingesting the putrid water..even puking on stage during live performances in Sydney,Australia...a few months later.
The adventures were far too many including giant spiders,sleepless nights and strange noises..that guitarist Andy Taylor decided to dedicate a whole chapter on the band's Sri Lanka trip in his book Wild Boy: My Life in Duran Duran.
"Hungry Like the Wolf" sold more than a million copies in the U.S reaching the 3rd spot in the coveted Billboard Hot 100 charts around April 1982.
While the album Rio sold more than 2.4 million copies in the States, becoming the band's second most successful album to date after their 1983 multi-platinum album Seven and the Ragged Tiger.
The success of Rio would propel the band to create more magic with their music including tracks such as "Wild Boys", "A View to Kill" and "Some Like it Hot" ...eventually making them one of the very few bands to have sold more than 100 million records as of June 2016.
