"Girlfriend" is a song by Pebbles an American singer for her self-titled studio album of 1987. Perri Reid is an American artist who is well known for creating a contemporary RandB group TLC.
She is now an Atlanta based minister who is known as “Sister Perri”.She started her career in 1981 as a backing vocalist for the band leader and percussionist Bill Summers and the band Con Funk Shun.
She was working at an Oakland real estate office where she met contractor George L. Smith. Smith gave Perri $80000 for a demo tape and video for “Mercedes Boy” which led to a contract with MCA. The two later got married in 1985 and made San Francisco their home.
"Girlfriend" was released as the lead single to her self-titled album on October 26, 1987, by the MCA label.
The song was initially meant for Vanessa Williams’ debut album The Right Stuff, and according to L.A. Reid,the legendary producer..who worked with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and the man behind the group TLC.. Vanessa’s recording label had interest in L.A. Reid's recording “Girlfriend”.
However, when L.A. Reid played Williams the song in his apartment, Pebbles heard the song and offered Reid more money and two cars on top for the chance to record the song.
Reid accepted and the production team was told not to work on any other song for Vanessa Williams’s debut album and because of this incident, Reid said that Vanessa never spoke to him ever again.
The song became Pebbles first top 5 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the number 1 song on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The song became her only top ten hit in the UK, where it peaked at number eight. The video for the song has more than 3 million views on YouTube.
