“Who Let The Dogs Out” was written by Anslem Douglas for the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival season of 1998. Nobody would listen to the song silently any time it was played. Everyone would sing along to the chorus.
This was the band’s first hit in the US and the UK. The song gained a lot of popularity after it appeared in Rugrats in Paris The Movie and its soundtrack album.
The song was a dance recording video and it topped the charts in New Zealand and Australia as well as getting to the top 40 in the United States. It also peaked at number two on UK Singles chart.
In 2000 the song became one of the highest selling singles of the decade without getting to number one. It was also Britain’s fourth biggest selling single of the millennium.
The song rose to higher levels and it became famous going ahead to win the Grammy for the Best Dance Recording at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
After becoming famous and gaining a lot of popularity, the song became the subject of a lawsuit over copyright ownership, but it was later settled.
The song video currently has more than 26 million views on YouTube and it was the song that put Baha Men out in the limelight. The song received harsh critical reception which many people didn’t think it deserved.
In a poll conducted in 2007 to find the most annoying song, it was ranked third and it also ranked first in “Top 20 Worst Songs Ever” on 2008 Spinners list. But come to think of it, the song wasn’t so bad.
