On February 19, 1991, the American rock band R.E.M released "Losing My Religion" as a single from their 1991 album, Out of Time.
It was written by Mike Mills, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Michael Stipe. Producers included Scott Litt with the help of the band.
With the help of Warner Bros. Record Label, "Losing My Religion" hit top five in the United States.
After scoring various nominations for the 1992 Grammy Awards, the song won two including for Best Short Form Music Video and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The band promoted the track by appearing on MTV, visiting radio stations and giving press interviews often.
Apart from making the band popular, the track boosted their album’s sales level from 1 million to 10 million.
It's music video was directed by Tarsem Singh and received nine nominations at the 1991 MTV Video Music Award where it won six of them; Best Group Video, Video of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Breakthrough Video.
So far, the track has been viewed over 433 million times on YouTube. R.E.M performed the song live in Toronto on 2001, in Austin, Texas on March 2008, and at the MTV’s 10th Anniversary among others.
On October 1997, Berry departed from the group and the rest continued to thrive until September 21, 2011, when the band called it quits.
Their decision to break was not an easy one, but for reasons vaguely known to the public, R.E.M became a memory to the fans.
Peter Buck has faced the court for being drunk on a British Airplane, and two common assaults that were cleared.
After years of public speculations, Michael Stipe revealed his marriage to Thomas Dozol in 2014. Sources claim that the two wed secretly after a decade of dating.
