Some songs may have taken a year or two in the making but none since the history of Soundscan era have taken more than 6 years to refine and re-refine, before it was released to the international audience in early May 2014.
The track was "Cheerleader", the singer is the Jamaican hot shot OMI. After tasting initial success in his native Jamaica where "Cheerleader" peaked the charts with ease, mid 2008.
OMI decided to go big with the track by making minor changes, to cater to an international audience.
But it took more than 5 years for some of Jamaica's finest musicians including Robbbie, Dillon and Sly to refine the track,yet OMI wasn't impressed and wanted to tweak it even further.
His American record label Ultra Music stepped in by hiring a handful of popular DJs to remix the song, finally a German teenager,DJ Felix Jaehn had Ultra Music executives going bonkers with his 'all instruments included' remix.
DJ Felix Jaehn's remix encompassed most of the Afro beats including...conga drum beat, 60s Jazz trumpet and a touch of classic piano.Released in the fall of 2014, the song was an enormous success.
Although some critics labeled OMI a one hit wonder, they still cannot take away the commercial success he had created with "Cheerleader".
Thanks to Spotify,the song was streamed more than 460 million times around the globe, selling more than 800,000 copies on the digital download platforms such as iTunes and amazon music, in the U.K alone.
"Cheerleader" dominated the Billboard charts in the U.S around January 2015,selling 2 million copies... it topped the U.S Billboard Hot 100,Mainstream Top 40 and Rhythmic charts.
Selling an unprecedented 5.5 million copies worldwide in less than 3 months, Billboard magazine named it Song of the Summer of 2015.
OMI had many other hits including "In the Quest", "Wake Up" , "Angelous" and "Hardmony" but none was able to replicate the commercial success of "Cheerleader",prompting critics to compare OMI with Carly Rae Jepsen, who is yet to create a song as good as "Call Me Maybe'.
