OneRepublic - Counting Stars(#ad)
Released on the 14th of June 2013, "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic is one of those very rare tracks still getting a considerable amount of views on YouTube, this inspite a very controversial theme.
Where a Christian preacher evokes unbelievable emotions amongst his congregation during a 'revival service'.
Not many know that the theme of "Counting Stars" music video was based on the real life financial struggles of OneRepublic's lead singer Ryan Tedder before he became rich and famous.
In the music video, a Christian preacher is preaching his fiery sermon in the first floor, where as the OneRepublic band is playing the song in the ground floor parking lot of the same building.
As the band plays and the preacher preaches, an alligator is seen coming out of the rest room, and the camera captures the preacher with his mouth wide open just like the alligator.
Perhaps this comparison between the preacher and the alligator is an indirect hint, that this preacher is preaching this sermon..just for the sake of money.
Or another way to interpret this song is, the preacher is only praying only for the financial needs of his followers and does not preach about love, compassion, humility and generosity the very foundations of Christianity.
Or this could be an indirect message to one of those preachers who came across Ryan's life, when he was young.
Ryan Tedder who is a born again Christian and was very spiritual during his teens, had written many Gospel and Contemporary-Christian songs, which are very popular in the Bible-belt states of America.
At the end of video the congregation members fall to the ground floor, as the wooden floor caves-in.Perhaps, another innuendo that the preacher's sermon is taking the congregation straight to hell.
Nevertheless, "Counting Stars" is a very popular video on YouTube.
Published on YouTube on 31st of May 2013, "Counting Stars" is the 11th most viewed VEVO music video on the YouTube platform, of all time..as on May 2017.
Many critics have attributed the success of "Counting Stars" to Ryan Tedder's compelling voice which the listener eventually gets addicted to..playing the song again and again..as mentioned in many YouTube comments for this song.
"Counting Stars" which spent 25 consecutive weeks in the top 10 spots of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, was very unfortunate to have not reached the top spot in the Hot 100 charts, inspite of taking the 2nd spot for 2 consecutive weeks.
Thanks to "Timber" by Pitbull which topped the Hot 100 charts during the same period, 3rd and 4th week of January 2014.
Released as the lead single for their multi-platinum album Native, "Counting Stars" sold more than 11 million copies around the world. With more than 5.4 million copies sold in the U.S alone.
The single sold more than a million copies in the U.K, half a million copies in Australia and 640,000 copies in Canada.
"Counting Stars" became their biggest hit over taking the sales record of OneRepublic's signature song, the 2007 chart topper "Apologize".
The track reached the top 10 chart positions in more than 25 countries including Switzerland, Scotland, Italy, Hungary, Israel, Norway, France, Denmark, New Zealand, Brazil, Austria and Germany.

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Yeah we'll be counting stars
I see this life, like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
And in my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye' shall find
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
On just doing what we're told
I-I-I-I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
I-I-I-I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
I feel the love and I feel it burn
Down this river, every turn
Hope is our four-letter word
Make that money, watch it burn
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
On just doing what we're told
I-I-I-I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I've learned
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I've learned
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I've learned
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I've learned
Everything that kills me, makes feel alive...
