We Are Young - fun. Featuring Janelle Monae(#ad)
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Won’t that be fun!
“We are Young”, the anthemic song to the good times with friends, is American pop-theatric rock group fun.’s no.1 hit single.
This ear-pleasing catchy song came out in 2011 and is a symbol of our YOLO pro-hedonistic times. It is the lead single from fun.’s second studio album Some Nights that was released in 2012 and features alternative- singer, songwriter & actress Janelle Monáe.
fun. was formed in 2008 by lead singer & songwriter Nate Ruess who got multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost and guitarist Jack Antonoff to join him.
All 3 of them were a part of other bands previously. Their first album Aim and Ignite didn’t get them the recognition they were seeking.
Some Nights, their sophomore album, came off a partnership with music producer moghul Jeff Bhasker, after Bhasker was “blown away” on a meeting with Ruess.
The producer is the hit maker behind artists, including Kanye West, Drake and Beyoncé. He has co-written all the songs on Some Nights and brought a certain flair to fun.’s style.
The album is a pot of classic rock and hip-hop and electronic effects, leaning towards theatrical flamboyance.
In an interview with NY Times, Nate Ruess said, “I remember George Harrison once said E.L.O. is what the Beatles would have sounded like if they had kept going.
I think that ’70s classic music if it had continued to go — that this is what it would sound like.”
Once the single “We are Young” was out, there was no stopping it. It was a breakout hit - it hit no.1 on the Hot 100 and stayed for 6 straight weeks.
It made fun. the first multi-member rock band in a decade to have a no.1 Billboard entry on the Hot 100 since Nickelback’s "How You Remind Me" in 2001-02.
It hit no.1 in many countries too & has sold over 10 Million units. The single forged ahead, with further leverage in a Super Bowl ad and a cover on “Glee”.
In 2013 the song won a GRAMMY Award for Song of the Year and fun. won the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist.
“We Are Young” is a warm song with sharp arrangements and multiple vocal harmonies.
Reuss moves deftly between verbal relay and a sweep into the declaration, "Tonight, we are young/So let's set the world on fire" in the massive chorus hook. The interesting video features the band performing in bow-ties amidst a bar brawl in slo-mo.
If you’d like to listen to more of Janelle Monáe’s voice on the track, pick up the acoustic version of the song.
Watch out for more from this talented girl – in 2016 she had major roles in Academy Award-nominated films Hidden Figures & Moonlight, with the latter winning the Best Picture award.
As for fun., we wait for an update on another band-collaboration as all 3 members pursue their individual projects currently.

Album - Some Nights
Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I'm trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down, I'll carry you home
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Now I know that I'm not
All that you got, I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a tab
'Cause I found someone to carry me home
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home tonight
