“Moi Lolita” which means Me Lolita in English is a song by French singer Alizee. The song was released as a debut single from her debut album Gourmandises when she was 15.
Alizee first appeared on the M6 channel’s talent show Graines de Star where she originally wanted to sign up for the dance contest.
However, this category was reserved for groups only. Therefore, she joined the singing category. She performed the song “Waiting for Tonight” by Jennifer Lopez and “Ma Priere” a single which she had released in 1997.
After this, she went on and won the MeilleureGraine award for the most promising young singing star of tomorrow.
Veteran songwriters Mylene Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat who were at that time looking for a young and fresh voice to partake in their new project saw her winning performance and they approached her. She was later on selected after a few studio auditions.
The song was supposed to be instrumental in showing Alizee’s image as that of a seductive Lolita character in the song.
After the release of the song, Peter Robinson of NME acclaimed the song saying it is pop as pop should be. To him, it was a perfect union of innocence and experience which the French always seemed to be overwhelmingly capable of.
The videowas directed by Laurent and it is about Alizee dancing in a nightclub and having fun. The video was first aired on 26 July 2000 on M6.
The song was popular and it peaked in many countries like Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, and Italy, Greece, the UK and many others.
The song has more than 32 million views on YouTube and in France, the song reached number two and stayed on top for 24 consecutive weeks.
