Drums of Passion Babatunde Olatunji(#ad)
Many people would have called you insane,if you had released an African music compilation album by just one artist back in the 1960s. But that's what renowned Nigerian drummer Babatune Olatunji did on the 15th of February 1960, when he released Drums of Passion, an album still rocking the charts.
In the 60s selling 100,000 copies of your album made you a superstar, selling 5 million copies of pure unadulterated African music..that made you a genius, Babatune Olatunji the drumming genius was introduced to the world on the Valentine's day of 1960.
Discovered by John Hammond the legendary Producer from Columbia Records in 1958, Drums of Passion would be the first African album to be totally produced and recorded in American studios.
Belonging to the famous Yoruba ethnic group of Nigerian-Ghana origin, known for their centuries old drumming tradition and festivals..it was not a surprise to many in Nigeria and Ghana that Yoruba Babatune Olatunji was able to achieve such incredible feats in the promised land, U.S.A.
"Jin-Go-Lo-Ba" the most popular track from Drums of Passion, had it's influences of many popular musicians including Carlos Santana, Fatboy Slim and an other handful of artists.
Carlos Santana's 1969 cover of Babatunde Olatunji's "Jin-Go-Lo-Ba" on his very first debut album Santana became so popular, that for almost 30 years Carlos Santana was credited for "Jin-Go-Lo-Ba" instead of Babatunde Olatunji. One really hopes that Olatunji was paid his royalties for those 30 years...which were due to him.
