Tinto Brass - Paprika (1991)(#ad)
Release Date: February 13th, 1991
Paprika is a 1991 Italian drama written and directed by the legendary Tinto Brass. Based on John Cleland’s novel Fanny Hill, which was first published in 1748, this Italian language flick features stars like Debora Caprioglio, Martine Brochard, Stephane Ferrera and Stephane Bonnet.
Paprika is all about a girl named Mimma (Debora Caprioglio) who forces herself into prostitution to raise money for her penniless boyfriend to start his own business.
The film received mostly negative reviews from critics with no respect whatsoever to the legend Tinto Brass as the movie theme showed huge disrespect for women.
The Story Begins
When a young eighteen year old brunette (Debora Caprioglio) Mimma joins a brothel to help her poverty struck boyfriend, little did she know that her new profession would eventually take away her heart & soul from the only thing she cherished the most in the world, her boyfriend.
Paprika as she is fondly called in the brothel, is the cynosure of clients with many willing to spend a fortune just for a night's stay with her.
Unlike Belle de Jour, this one does not deal with the foibles of the bored. It is largely an economic calculation, despite the fact that after some time, Paprika clearly starts to enjoy her work as a prostitute even though she was in this line just for the sake of her boyfriend.
Plot
When the original version was released in 1958, Brothels were illegal in Italy as the Merlin Law was in full effect. Mimma (Debora Caprioglio), a young 18 year old country girl is the new kid in town town, decides to work as a prostitute as she figures out, that the oldest profession in the world is still the most lucrative of them all.
She is later given the name Paprika at the house of Madame Collette (Martine Brochard). In order to earn funds fast she had to do extra things to please her clients which many of her co-workers would despise, but Paprika's quench for money is insatiable and she quickly loses all of her self-respect, self-confidence for her daring acts with the clients.
But eventually manages to find redemption, a true love and the wealth that she was looking for all along.
Verdict
If you are a soft porn movie fan, then you won't be disappointed as Paprika offers very little apart from the erotic scenes, with zero action, adventure or thrill to it.
However, this flick is an excellent example of erotic films as it perfectly captures the beauty of Debora Caprioglio from every possible angle.Joe D’Amato made a remake of Paprika in 1995 with the title Paprika – The last Italian Whore.
