On the last week of September 2012, "Gangnam Style" reached the 1st spot in the UK charts, as Psy became the first Asian singer ever to cross 1 million copies of sales for a single.
In the U.S, "Gangnam Style" reached the 2nd spot in the coveted Billboard Hot 100 charts,despite the frenzy and the mania created by Psy for "Gangnam Style", the single never reached the top spot of the Hot 100 charts, thanks to Maroon 5's "One More Night".
The song did top the worldwide iTunes charts as Psy earned more than $300,000 as royalty payment from iTunes.The music video for "Gangnam Style" does not deal with any specific theme, but the luxurious life of affluent people living in Gangnam district of South Korea's capital Seoul.
The video begins with Psy relaxing and stretching himself out in the middle of a children's park, and then shifts to a horse stable..where he is formally dressed and does the famous Gangnam Style dance.
Psy then dances in the open in front of two guys playing Korean chess. but an unknown explosion happens near the place where they play chess..as the two chess players..dive to save themselves from the explosion.That's when Psy walks straight to the camera and sings "Oppan Gangnam Style".
And takes a very strange turn when foam, newspaper and broken thermocoal pieces are blown at him by a gaint fan, as he walks out of the horse stable. Psy is then seen taking a steam bath..while staring at a skinny guy, who does some kind of a strange seductive dance..which has Psy's total attention.
Perhaps an indirect hint at strange things that happen in the Gangnam district of Seoul.He then dances with a few models at an indoor tennis stadium and also inside a moving bus, filled with elderly people.
Shot exclusively in the Gangnam district, Psy walks to an outdoor Yoga session..see's a hot woman's back and screams at it.A guy dressed in a total yellow suit drives out of a sleek Mercedes-Benz SLK 200, confronts Psy to a dance duel.
Psy is then seen in an elevator, on the floor..singing between the legs of another guy (a popular Korean comedian), while that guy thrusts his pelvis on Psy's face..perhaps another hint of strange things that happen in the Gangnam district.
The focus then shifts to the subway train, where Psy is attracted by a young woman dancing inside the train, she seems to be attracted to him as well,as both run to each other in slow motion, hugging each other as Psy looks straight into the eyes of that woman and sings "Oppan Gangnam Style".
Inspite of the song's phenomenal success across the globe, "Gangnam Style" never gained any traction in Japan, inspite of it's proximity to South Korea.
Cultural differences between the 2 countries, politics and the bad image of Psy, as projected by the Japanese media are to be blamed for the song's fiasco in Japan.
The music video was chosen as the Best Music Video at MTV Euro Music Awards 2012, as he was signed by Schoolboy Records, which also has an extended contract with Justin Bieber.
This was Psy's first major international hit and despite being signed to Schoolboy Records, Psy was unable to reproduce his magic and is well on his way to be labelled as a one-hit wonder.
The last video that Psy released was on 10th of May 2017,the title of the video being "New Face" which has more than 30 million views and 500,000 likes.
This super hot video has Psy do some acrobatic dance moves, as he has lost a considerable amount of weight since the Gangnam Style days, almost 5 years ago.
Even though "New Face" is getting a considerable amount of views on YouTube, it has failed to gain any traction outside his fan zone and is already 'trending out'.
Only time will reveal if Psy would be able to reproduce the magic of "Gangnam Style" in the near future or is he going to be, the most dreaded word for a musician a 'one hit wonder'.
