 Enigma - Sadeness(#ad)

Released November 1990, Pope John Paul II wanted Enigma's "Sadeness" banned from Italy and Vatican forever, Christian groups in the U.S called them (Enigma) devil worshipers because of the strange Gregorian chantings in the song that made the common American queasy.

And their dark album covers sent shivers down the spines of every major religious sect across the globe.

No one had ever heard anything like this before, the very fear of the unknown propelled the song's sales, making producer Michael Cretu's Enigma, the best selling song in Germany..for many years to come.

Criticized by many as a direct attack on the Catholic church... "Sadeness" deals with corruption, debauchery and abuse of power by the Catholic church during the middle or dark ages of mankind.

Music video for "Sadeness" is based on the life of Marquis de Sade, a medieval era Catholic scholar with close ties to the Vatican, living in France.

This pious young scholar is being haunted by the devil in the form of a beautiful woman, tries to seduce him..to lead him astray from his path of righteousness.

With scary visions of hell and a constant whispering in his ears asking him to give-in, spoken by this beautiful woman in a male voice, implying that this is the devil himself.

Sade tries to run and hide in the corridors of a middle age French monastery, Sade is finally sucked into a hole leading to hell.

He eventually gives into the voice, abandons his celibate-monastery life, becomes a playboy, fulfilling every fetish sexual desire of his and eventually becomes a sadistic erotic novel writer.

It has to be noted that the English word Sadism is indeed derived from this French writer's last name Sade, who controversial sensual erotic novels in the 17th and 18th century were filled with sadistic sensual acts that was way ahead of it's time and is forbidden till this day.

Many writers of the 18th and 19th century called Marquis de Sade a Satanist for his forbidden writings on sadism and sex, tried to kill him, but never succeeded as he was protected by the Vatican.

"Sadeness" is infact a dark homage from Engima's producer Michael Cretu to Marquis de Sade, a character whom he is obsessed with.

Selling more than 2 million copies, "Sadeness" topped every chart in every country across the Europe during the holiday season of 1991, including the U.K charts.

But in the U.S it could only reach the 5th spot in the Billboard Hot 100 charts, since Michael Jackson's Dangerous album was sweeping the States with "Black or White" breaking records after records.
