Summary details of Superman Returns
After investigating the remains of his destroyed homeland planet Krypton and recognizing that he is the only surviving Krypton, Superman returns to earth.
Through his five-year absence, he finds it difficult to regain his place in a society that has learned to survive without a Superman. The forgotten superhero sees his widowed adoptive mother Martha Kent again.
Martha has decided to sell the farm on which Clark grew up. In flashbacks, he remembers the discovery of his super-teenagers.
As Superman wants to resume his normal existence as reporter Clark Kent in the daily newspaper Daily Planet, he must painfully realize that there is no place left for him in the life of his workmate Lois Lane.
She is now married to Richard White and has a son named Jason. In addition, she is the author of the article "Why the World does not need Superman" and is to receive the Pulitzer Prize Award.
As Superman can just prevent a plane crash, he reappears in public for the first time, and his return encounters general enthusiasm.
Lois, too, does not seem to be reluctant to re-initiate her relationship with the superhero despite her previously written article and her relationship with Richard.
After initial skepticism and anger, because Superman has left her and the world without saying goodbye, she finally accepts his apology.
Lois has now managed to find Luthor's villa as the source of the power failure but does not know that it belongs to him. On the day of the Pulitzer Prize Ceremony, she goes there with her son Jason to pursue the matter.
Her curiosity takes her to the nearby anchored ship, where she is surprised by Luthor and taken to the sea as a prisoner. After a brief conversation with Luthor, Jason is shown to be sensitive to the kryptonite in Luthor's hand.
He realizes his plan and shoots the crystal he has worked into the sea, whereupon it begins to grow. Lois can secretly send a fax to the Daily Planet and passes the coordinates of their location.
Brutus, a collaborator of Luthor, attacks her, but Jason throws a piano at him and kills him. Richard looks up with a water jet, and Superman also flies there.
The emergence of the crystal island causes huge earthquakes that threaten the metropolis. Superman first flies back to the city to protect the city's inhabitants from harm.
Meanwhile, Richard Lois and Jason are freed, but the ship is damaged by the ever-growing island and it threatens to sink. Superman finally saves the three, takes them to the boat and looks for Luthor.
When he finds him, his powers fail because of the kryptonite that makes up the island. Luthor's men take advantage of the moment of weakness and attack the defenseless superhero with kicks and blows so that the man goes to the ground.
Luthor savors the moment of triumph before he rams a kryptonite splinter into the body, causing him to crash unconscious into the sea. Lois, Richard, and Jason return to the island with the boat to help Superman.
Jason discovers him first as he is drowning in the sea. Lois succeeds in recovering the weakened superhero and removing the kryptonite fragment.
Through the power of the sun, Superman powers are regenerating. With his heat vision, he separates the artificial island from the seabed and carries it into space, breaking large parts of it and freeing the kryptonite.
Luthor escapes with his lover Kitty, but his accomplices die by falling crystal rocks. Before Luthor can finally escape, Kitty throws the remaining crystal chips from the helicopter, so Luthor can no longer use them.
After Superman pushed the island into outer space, the Kryptonite weakens him again. He falls over Metropolis and strikes in a park. He is seriously injured in a hospital.
First, the doctors cannot help him until they realize that there is still a piece of kryptonite in his body that paralyzes him.
In an operation, the splitter is removed, but Superman is still in a coma. Lois Lane is the only one who has the permission to visit the sick superhero with her son.
Jason expresses his affection for Superman with a kiss on his forehead. A short time later, Superman recovers and leaves the hospital unseen.
He suddenly realized that Jason must be his own son. When Lois later is working on her new article, Why the World Needs Superman, she is visited by Superman, who promises her to be close at hand.
Then he leaves Lois, Richard, and Jason, so the family is not separated. The last scene shows Superman looking down from space to Earth.

Superman Returns is a DC film that is one of the first of its kind. Prior to this movie, DC Superhero films were rare, so there were not a lot of live-action Superhero films that featured DC characters such as Batman or Superman.
