When Toronto rapper Drake dropped his upcoming album’s second single “One Dance”, he probably didn’t realize the records he would be hitting with the massive success of this 'dancehall afrobeat'inspired groovy tune.
The single, a part of his fourth studio album Views, hit 1 Billion individual streams on Spotify, making Drake the first artist to have this distinction.
It went on to spend 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard 100 and 15 weeks at No.1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart in 2016, selling more than 9 Million units worldwide.
“One Dance” features Drake’s second collaboration with Nigerian recording artist Wizkid and samples Crazy Cousinz’s 2008 UK funky remix of Paleface and Filipino R&B singer Kyla’s “Do You Mind”.
It is produced by Drake album regulars Nineteen85, Noah “40” Shebib, DJ Maphorisa and also Wizkid. “One Dance” talks about the connection two people can have in a club, where they exist in an island of their own.
The single reached number one in 15 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France and Germany and became Drizzy’s first #1 single in all 15 countries as the lead artist.
It stayed at no.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 10 non-consecutive weeks and the UK Singles Chart for 15 consecutive weeks.
It became Apple Music’s best performing song of the year, overtaking the previous record held by Major Lazer and DJ Snake's "Lean On".
The single was released alongside “Pop Style”, another Views track that features hip-hop duo The Throne (Kanye West and Jay Z).
Views has sold over 2.5 Million copies worldwide & took all the top spots in Apple Music’s year-end charts for 2016.
Drake earned eight GRAMMY nominations, including ‘Album of the Year’ & ‘Best Rap Album’ for the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards.
The album’s lead track “Hotline Bling” won the GRAMMY for Best Rap/Song Performance and the GRAMMY for Best Rap Song.
Drizzy ended 2016 as the most streamed artist with 4.7 Billion streams on Spotify for the second consecutive year.
Drake currently holds the record for the most number of no.1 hits on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart
