Crowded House(#ad)
They called themselves Crowded House, after living in a murky suburban Los Angeles flat when they were shopping for a Record Label, mid 1986.
Crowded House did find one in Capitol Records..which under-promoted them, instead of ever promoting them, resulting in their best ever song to date "Don't dream it's over" riveted to the 40th position in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
A shocked Crowded House also known as Mullanes felt betrayed and decided to promote themselves by singing in front of music stores, pubs and restaurants instead of opting for mega tours and concerts as they were in deficit.
The plan did work as the North American audience were able to empathize with Crowded House, more importantly their music ,helping them push their self-titled album to the 12th spot in the Billboard 200 Albums charts.
"Don't dream it's over" sky rocketed to the 2nd spot in the U.S Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and "Something So Strong" one of Crowded House's signature tracks managed to reach the 7th spot in the same charts around March 1987, thanks to their self-promotion.
Neil Finn who founded Crowded House in 1985 after his brother Tim Finn abandoned their first band Split Enz was unable to recreate the magic of his first album Crowded House and since been tagged as a two-hit wonder in the States.
But down under in Australia Crowded House enjoyed a super star status even with the release of their low key second album Temple of Low Men which went Gold.
It was around this time, late 1988 that drummer late Paul Hester suffered severe mood swings which was later confirmed as depression.
The band eventually disbanded and everything went back to where it all started, Neil Finn united with his brother Tim Finn who was later introduced as the newest member of Crowded House while Paul Hester voluntarily stepped out.
